MELBOURNE - The death of Sgt.-Pilot Peter Morphett Piggott, formerly of Clarendon, in an aircraft accident, is reported in an Air Force casualty list issued today, which contains the names of 31 members of the R. A. A. F. serving overseas.
South Australians included are:
Killed in Aircraft Accident - Sgt. P. M. Piggott, Clarendon.
Missing in Air Operations - Sgt. R. H. Nitschke, Hiltaba Station via Port Augusta.
Seriously Injured in Accident - Sgt. B. E. Hack, View road, Blackwood.
Injured in Air Operations - Sgt. R. A. Borchers, Berri.
Previously Reported Injured, Now Reported Not Injured - Sgt. D. G. Scott, Berri.

Sgt. Piggott's parents Mr. and Mrs. S. L. Piggott of Clarendon, received advice that he was buried at Castlemaine Cemetery, Sunderland, England. He was aged 21.
Before he enlisted in the R. A. A. F. in October 1940, Sgt. Piggott assisted in his father's vineyard and later studied for the woolclassing diploma at the Adelaide School of Mines. In February last he went to Rhodesia to complete his training as a pilot and there he married a South African girl in September.

Technical failure
Son of Arthur and Lillian Trotter, of Sydney, New South Wales, Australia,
husband of Jean Bainbridge Fullarton Trotter, of Carruthers, Saskatchewan, Canada.

P/O J. A. Trotter was a member of the crew of Stirling bomber N6083 OJ-N which took off from Lakenheath (Suffolk) on a mission to Frankfurt. An engine caught fire almost immediately, causing the aircraft to crash just a mile away from the end of the runway. All the crew were killed.

Lancaster W4262 took off from RAF Scampton at 1721 hours on the night of 10/11th November 1942, detailed to carry out a gardening mission and lay mines in the mouth of the Gironde Estuary, France.
At 2238 hours a 2nd class fix was obtained which placed the aircraft about 40 miles south of Portland Bill. The aircraft was later in contact with the MFTA Station base. A final message QDM300 was received which was acknowledged. The aircraft crashed just after the last message when it flew into high ground at Girsby Park near Burgh on Bain, 8 miles south of Binbrook. All the crew were killed.

Deaths On Active Service

HASKINS - Sacred to the memory of Flight-Sgt. Ron Haskins, who lost his life in air operations over Europe, August 16, 1943, school friend of Jack, beloved young friend of Kath, Ted and Agnes Quigley; aged 22 years. Always bright and happy. God's Will be done.

HASKINS.- On August 16, in United Kingdom; Flight-Sergeant Ron Haskins, beloved young friend of Mr. and Mrs. J. W. Sanders and familly.
HASKINS - On August 16, F/Sgt. R. H. (Ronnie) Haskins, fond and sincere friend of Kelly Rogers. Gone, but not forgotten.


Airborne was on 2029hrs on 15 Aug 1943 from Scampton for Milan and overshot the runway on return to Scampton and crashed 0420hrs. The aircraft had suffered an engine failure in flight and bounced due to a heavy landing from the first approach. The pilot attempted to perform a 3-engined overshoot to try landing again, but failed to correct the swing which developed as the aircraft gained speed. The aircraft crashed, caught fire and was destroyed. Pilot P/O J. Smithers (Australian and 3 of his crew died in the crash.
Rear gunner F/Sgt. Haskins was critically injured and died within a few hours after the accident. Along with P/O Smithers, he is buried in Scampton (St. John the Baptist) Churchyard.
