William R. Tordik was born on 26 February 1924 in New York. His parents were Salvatore and Emilia Carnemolla Tomacchio. He was fallen on 23 July 1944 in France and interred in the Long Island National Cemetery, Suffolk, New York, on 24 April 1948.
A local newspaper reported his death: Private William Tordik, Centereach, is killed after writing parents Pvt. William R. Tordik, Jr., aged 20, was killed in action in France on July 23 according to a War department telegram received by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. William R. Tordik, Sr., of Woodland avenue, Centereach. Private Tordick, who would have reached his twenty-first birtday next January, was inducted into the Army in July 1943. He had been overseas four months, and went to France with the invasion forces. A graduate of Smithtown Branch High School, he was employed by the Sperry Gyroscope company of Lake Success before entering the Army. His last letter to his parents was one written July 23, which was received in Centereach on August 5. The letter reflected such high spirits, as did also one written on the same date to a friend, that his parents were unwilling at first to believe the War department's report. Mr. Tordik, the father, served with the Army in France in the first World war, and is a member of Henry James Jones post, Veterans of Foreign Wars, of Medford. |
