His parents were William Joyce Townsend and Sarah Townsend, nee Grundy. He was married to Sarah Smith in the Cathedral Church of St. Peter and St. Paul in Sheffield, Yorkshire, England on 24 December 1875. Following children of the couple are known: Annie Joyce Townsend (1876-1945), William Joyce Townsend (1878-1939), William Joyce Townsend (1878-1880), Betsy Joyce Townsend (1880-1967), and Mary Jane Joyce Townsend (1882-1953). John died in Birkenhead, Cheshire, England in January 1923.

She was married to John Ernest Timperley in the Church of St. Margaret in Barking, Essex, England on 20 January 1900. Ernest died in 1918 and Betsy was married to Edward "Ned" Connolly in Prescot, Lancashire, England on 03 September 1920. The family emigrated to Canada and arrived Quebec, Ontario, Canada on 14 May 1927. They resided at 340, Cobden Street in Sarnia, Co. Lambton, Ontario, Canada in 1945. Betsy died in Sarnia, Co. Lambton, Ontario, Canada on 17 May 1967.
