Coal too cheap?
Mr. John Thompson, of South Shields, an old miner's leader in that district, suggests that the coal owners should help the miners by closing all their pits, and keeping them closed until the people whom he calls "gamblers in coal" abandon the "faked slump," which has caused the recent reductions in the men's wages. It is to be feared, however, that mere stoppages of production will not be sufficient to restore our industrial prosperity. (Published in the "Northern Echo" on December 7, 1921) | 04 February 2021
