Apprenticeship: Higher grade apprentice to Messrs. The Coventry Ordnance Works Ltd. (now English Electric Co.), Coventry, England (1914-1917) Turning, fitting, milling, erecting etc. on land and naval guns, aero engines, small tool work.
Subsequent career: Joined Commander Locker Lampson's Armoured Car Unit in 1917. Service in Persia, Russia and Mesopotamia 1917-1919. 1923 left England for America, obtained position as Assistant Research Engineer with Development Dept. Standard Oil Co., New Jersey. Since changed to Standard Oil Development Co. deals with patent, research and development work on oil and allied interests of the Standard Oil Co., New Jersey. My work the first two years was assisting Dr. Wright in charge of engine research, fuel testing and lubrication work on engines supplemented with road tests on cars. Giving advice on patents dealing with this phase of the business. Since expansion of the company and enlargement of the laboratories I have been made research engineer in charge of the engine section of the physical research laboratory and the mechanical shop run in connection with same. Much of my time has been spent on investigation of "Knock" in petrols and developing and coordinating method for measuring same. I am at present in charge of the control work for this. |
