Alfred Stowell Jones: Indian Mutiny Victoria Cross Medal Recipient. He served as a Lieutenant in the 9th Queen's Royal Lancers. On June 8, 1857, Lieutenant Jones commanded a squadron in a charge on rebels at Budle-K-Serai, Delhi, India. Although they offered a heavy resistance, he rode straight through the front post killing the drivers and capturing one of their guns. With the assistance of another squadron, he turned upon a village, strongly held by the mutineers and drove them out. For extreme bravery, he was awarded the Victoria Cross Medal and later achieved the rank of Lieutenant Colonel. |
