"A WORTHLESS FELLOW" BIGAMIST SENTENCED TO 18 MONTHS IMPRISONMENT"This is one of the worst cases I have had before me for a long time. You deserted your wife and children 11 years ago, and they have since cost the rate-payers £1,300. That was, no doubt, a good thing for them, but it is, in itself, a serious offence. Then you posed as a single man, and married bigamously a respectable girl of 19. You are a worthless fellow." In these terms the Recorder, at the Old Bailey, yesterday, addressed William John Houlden, who pleaded guilty to bigamy, and passed on him sentence of 18 months' hard labour. Married in 1905, it was stated that the prisoner left his wife and children in the street in 1910. They had to go into the Workhouse, where his wife remained for nine months. His children were still chargeable to the Southwark Guardians. The second "wife" said prisoner was in the Army when she met him. She married him after six or seven weeks' acquaintance. He had not maintained her properly. (Published in the "Northern Echo" on December 07, 1921) |
