Death by Fire Arms On Saturday week, the following melancholy accident happened on the Island of Portland. As a preventative man, of the name Hancock, stationed in the island, who had just returned from duty, was cleaning the barrel of his pistol, the charge of which he had unfortunately omitted to withdraw, while holding it with the muzzle towards his person, it unhappily went off and the contents were lodged in his body excepting the ball, which passed through him causing immediate death. We regret to add, he has left a widow and seven children to lament their bereavement of a good husband and father. An Inquest was held on the body on Monday, before J. Wallis Esq., County Coroner, when the jury returned a verdict "Accidental death". We hear that a subscription has been begun and liberally seconded, on behalf of the distressed widow and family. |
