Henry Barnett Australia's First Fleet Capt. Arthur Phillip, R.N. was commissioned as the first Governor of New South Wales. He set sail on 13 May 1787 from Portsmouth with 11 vessels. He arrived in N.S.W. with 717 convicts of whom 180 were women, guarded by 191 marines under 19 officers. From the "LONDON GAZETTE", October 1788 Barnett, Henry, alias Barnard, alias Burton, Warwick Isaac and Eliza Barnett Australia's Second Fleet A second fleet of six ships left England - Guardian, Justinian, Lady Juliana, Surprize, Neptune, Scarborough. The Guardian struck ice, and was unable to complete the voyage. She was stocked with provisions. Only 48 people died in the first group of ships, but this time 278 died during the voyage. This time transporting the convicts was in the hands of private contractors.
