The war memorials were created for the offices in St. John Street to remember the employees of the Mander family who died in the two world wars. |

The dedication of Manders War Memorial in 1923: In the center are the family directors sitting cross legged (left to right):
Sir Geoffrey LeMesurier Mander, Liberal MP for Wolverhampton East Sir Charles Tertius Mander, 1st Baronet, first chairman of Mander Brothers Limited. est. in 1773 Sir Charles Arthur Mander, later 2nd Baronet Vivian Mander whose son was killed in WW II Gerald Poynton Mander, historian and antiquary |
After the factory was closed, the memorials spent some time in storage. When the storage facilities were then subsequently closed and there was the risk of the memorial being destroyed, the Mander family and National Trust worked together to bring them to Wightwick Manor so they could go back on public display. Since 1998 the memorials were attached to the stable block walls as this was then the only viable space large enough to fit them. This was not a suitable place for them to be and so we have moved them to this part of the garden where a small memorial garden will be planted to provide a place for reflection and peace. |
The war memorials on this wall came from Mander Brothers, St John Street, Wolverhampton. These men died for their country. The profits from their working lives helped establish Wightwick Manor which we enjoy today. |
In Memory of the men from these works who lost their lives in the Great War 1914-1918. |
