A local newspaper reported: Major J. H. F. Dixon - Brilliant Hull Officer Killed in Action News has been received that Major James Humphrey Ferris Dixon has been killed in action while commanding his battalion in Normandy. Major Dixon well known in Hull as a promising young solicitor, and was in partnership with his father Mr. Norman Dixon in the firm of Jacobs, Dixon and Sons. Major Dixon joined the East Yorkshire Regiment just before the war, and went to the Royal Staff College. Early in 1940 he temporarily resigned his commission and joined the Scots Guards as a private when the Finns were in need of help. Later he was promoted captain, and was successfully evacuted from Dunkirk. He then became staff officer and quickly rose to the rank of staff major with which rank he joined General Montgomery's staff in North Africa in 1942. In April 1943, he was with the 50th Division in Tunis, Sicily and Italy. As a boy Major Dixon was a chorister in Worcester Cathedral, and was educated at the King's School in that city. He studied law at Hull University College, and took honours in the Law Society and Ll. B. examinations. In May, 1942, he married Muriel, the only daughter of Dr. Douglas and Mrs. Martin of Zynemouth, and leaves one child, Susan. He was deeply interested in music, art, and nature, and for several years played with the first violins in the Hull Philharmonic Orchestra, of which he was honorary librarian. He was a keen Alpinist, and well known in sporting circles. He played cricket for Withernsea and rugger for the Hornsea R. F. C., of which he was captain in 1938. Two of his brothers are serving with the Forces.

The Stipendiary Magistrate (Mr. J. R. MacDonald), in the Hull Police Court to-day, made sympathetic reference to the death on active service of Major J. H. F. Dixon, the Hull solicitor. For the legal profession, Mr. Harry Wray said that all greatly regretted the loss of this young solicitor, who was a man of great promise and of charming personality. |

A newspaper reported: Mrs. M. Drewery, 1, Park-ave., Withernsea, has been notified that her youngest son, Sgt. Edward Drewery, aged 26, has died of wounds in Italy. Sgt. Drewery, who was a native of Withernsea, joined the Army as a volunteer in 14 (?), and spent over three years abroad, serving throughout the African campaign. Before the war he was a salesman with the firm of Peter Jones, London, and was a keen cyclist. He became captain of the Chelsea Cycling Club. Before going to London he was a pupil of the Wiothernsea Central School, and a popular member of the choir at St. Nicholas' Church, where a memorial service was held. His three brothers are all serving in H. M. Forces. |

Late Withernsea Airman The funeral took place at Withernsea of 19 years old Sub-Lt. Peter Draper, R.N. A. S. Before joining the service, under the youth entry scheme, he was employed at the Hull Paragon Station parcels office, and was a member of the Withernsea Home Guard. He gained matriculation honour at the Malet Lambert school, his early education being received at the Withernsea council scool. He qualified for his commission as a navigation officer on September 1 this year. The funeral service was conducted by Rev. G. E. Chandler at the St. Matthew's Church. and the interment took place at the Hull-rd. cemetery. The family mourners were Mr. and Mrs. T. Draper, parents; Mr. and Mrs. Dews, sister and brother-in-law; Mr. and Mrs. S. Needley, aunt and uncle; Mr. and Mrs. Usher, uncle and aunt; Mrs. Roberts and Mrs Maggs, aunts; Miss N. The Hull Daily Mail reported in June 1943: Withernsea D. F. M. The award of the Distinguished Flying has been made to Sgt. Raymond Escreet, of Withernsea, who was in civil life ib business with Escreet Bros., fruit merchants, Humber-st. As a boy he went to Withernsea Central School, and later Hymers College. Last month he was promoted to pilot-officer.

R.), aged 22, previously reported missing March 21st, 1945, now reported killed over Luxembourg on that day, dearly beloved elder son of Mr. and Mrs. F. H. Escreet, and brother of Margaret, Stephen, and Anita, Chestnut-ave., Withernsea. At the going down of the sun and in the morning we remember you. |
Narrative: Lockheed Hudson Mk IIIa, FK803/N, took off at 18:48 hrs on Operation BENEDICT, EXPRESS, LEADER on 20 March 1945. The Hudson was returning to England with the agents, who were not dropped owing to bad weather, when it was shot down. During flight at 00:45 hrs was attacked and set on fire by a night-fighter over the northern tip of the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg. Blown out with his parachute pack on fire when the aircraft exploded, the pilot was the sole survivor, although badly burned about the hands and face. The remaining three crew and three Belgian agents killed. It was thought later FK803 might have been attacked in error by an Allied night-fighter (USAAF P-61 Black Widow).

A local newspaper reported following: WITHERNSEA OFFICER Funeral of Lieut. K. Perry, R. E. The funeral took place on Monday of Lt. Kenneth Perry, R. E., 66, Promanade, Withernsea, who, at the age of 35, was killed on active service. Lt. Perry, who belong to a well known Holderness farming family, became employed in the Hull city architect's department at the Guildhall. Before joining the Forces two years ago he was a voluntary member of the Royal Observer Corps, and at the funeral personnel of the local section carried the Union Jack-draped coffin, while others formed a guard of honour under the direction of Observer-Officer W. S. Jackson. A wife and two young daughters are bereaved. The service was held at the St. Nicholas Church, Withernsea, and the interment took place in the churchyard. The Rev. G. E. Chandler officiated. |
