04 October 1943 31 Royal Australian Air Force Runnymede Memorial, Surrey, UK Son of Charles Stephen and Elizabeth Louisa Mincham, nee Clarke, of Kalgoorlie, Western Australia, husband of Joyce Mincham, of Beverley, Yorkshire. |
The marriage of Ernest Arthur Mincham to Joyce Ashton was registered in Brentford, Middlesex, England during the first quarter of 1943.
An extract of an article what was edited by the "Launceston Examiner" on 03 July 1943: . . . IN ARCTIC CIRCLE Sergeant E. A. Mincham, Kalgoorlie, and Sergeant W. Stott, Adelaide, have completed over 800 operational hours, mostly flying through the mist and drizzle of Northern Ireland or the Arctic snows and blizzards of Iceland. In Iceland they are based at Reikjavik, the capital. Their Nisson huts are heated by stoves, which are burning continuously, and earth is heaped three feet high round the outside walls to keep out the wind. Their spare time Is spent in improving their living quarters.
Fraser has only a wardrobe to finish before completing a suite made from painted packing cases. Films every night and an occasional concert party provide entertainment, while ski-ing in the winter is considered "wizard fun." . . .
A further report of the "Launceston Examiner" was edited on 04 September 1943: HONOUR for SINKING U-BOAT LONDON, Friday - Flight-Lieut. A. W. Fraser, of Millan Millan (Qld.) has been awarded an immediate bar to the D. F. C. for destroying a U-boat off Iceland in the face of intense flak which seriously damaged his long-range Liberator. Fraser returned to base with difficulty. His crew included Flight-Sgt. Ernest Mincham, of Kalgoorlie. Fraser has been flying with the Coastal Command for over three years. Fraser and his crew had been on patrol in the Atlantic off Iceland only three hours when the second pilot sighted the U-boat. Fraser immediately dived to attack, but the U-boat sighted the Liberator and started violent evasive action, at the same time opening fire with all guns. Fraser flew straight in through the flak at 50 feet above the sea and dropped depth charges in a perfect straddle, while his guns fired back at the U-boat. As the Liberator banked steeply after the attack, the crew saw the target hidden in depth charge explosions. Plumes of water had scarcely subsided when four or five Germans were seen in the water and within 20 minutes about 15 of them were clinging to a large, cylindrical object. Meanwhile great oil patches spread over the surface. |
