De Ruvignys Roll of Honour Collisson, Evelyn Ernest Arnold, 2nd Lieutenant, attd. 2nd Battn. The Bedfordshire Regiment, only son of the Rev. Thomas Collisson, Rector of Gravenhurst, Ampthill, co. Bedford, by his wife, Florence, daughter of William Grogan, of Queen's Gate, S. W.; born The Vicarage, Haynes, Bedford, 19 July, 1893 ; educated Boxgrove School, Guildford, and Aldenham School, co. Herts (Junior Platt Scholarship); during his five years at Aldenham he won prizes for Classics, History and Sports, and other honours, and was stated by his house master to have "achieved the greatest distinction possible at a public school"; a Leaving
Exhibition for the University was offered him, _but he preferred to enter into business, and joined the firm of Gibbs & Sons, 22, Bishopsgate, E. C.. who sent him to Valparaiso, Chile. On the outbreak of war he volunteered for service, and went across the Andes to Buenos Aires as the German Fleet was in the Valparaiso roads; gazetted 2nd Lieutenant 13 February 1915, to the Bcdfordshire Training Depot at Ampthill, and from there went to France; killed in action 23 February 1916 at 12.15 p.m., on the Somme front. Buried at Méricourt. His Commanding Ofiicer wrote to his father: "Your son was so popular in the regiment, and was one of the best officers I had. I cannot speak too highly of him, and I know it is a great blow to all his brother officers. He did his duty always splendidly." A memorial service was held in St. Giles' Church, Gravenurst; unm.
The "Bedfordshire Standard" reported following: A memorial service in memory of the late 2nd Lieut. R. A. Collisson, only son of the Rev. T. and Mrs. Collisson, who wu.s killed in action, as recorded in last week's issue, was held on Friday afternoon, in St. Giles' Church, Gravenhurst. The service was conducted by the Rev. C. Dickenson, Chaplain to the Duke of Bcdford's Camp, Ampthill, where the late officcr received his training, and was attended by His Grace the Duke of Bedford, twenty of the officers, including Majors Stevens, Nelson, and Young, Dr. Garner, ten non-commissioned officers, and men from the Ampthill Camp. Amongst those present were: The Rev. T. and Mrs. Collisson, Mrs. Hunter (aunt of the deceased), Miss Moore, Miss M. Osborn, Mrs. Nelson; Mr. and Mrs. W. P. Gordon, the Rev. and Mrs. C. Whitworth, Mr. and Mrs. R. Long and Miss Long, Mrs., Miss S. and Mr. R. Hanscombe, Dr. and Mrs. Roberts, the Missas Goodall, and Mrs. and Mr. N. Royston, in addition to a large number of parishioners who were anxious to express their sympathy. Mrs. Martin presided at the organ, and after she had played "O rest in the Lord" the aervice generally followed the Burial Service, omitting the committal. The psalms sung were 15 and 16, the hymns 499 and 401. Special collacta added were for A11 Saints' Day, and the latter part of the prayer for the Church Militant. Prayers for our troops and a war litany were also given. After the Benediction, still kneeling, the choir sang the Nunc Dimittis very softly. The Union Jack flew at half-mast from the Church tower, and a muffled peal on the bells was rung at the close of the servic. Second Lieutenant Evelyn E. A. Collisson was the only son of tho Rev. Thomas and Mrs. Collisson, of Gravonhurst Rectory, Ampthill, and was born at Haynes Vicarage, Bedford, on July 19th, 1893. He was educatod at Boxgrove School, Guildford, where he gained many prizes for both atudies and sports; and left a prefect at the top of the school in every aubject. He then entered Aldenham School, and gained a Junior Platt Scholarship, being placed at once in a form, V. B. During his five years at the school he won classical, history, and sports prizes, and the school heaped honours upon him. A Praepostor, Head of Mr. Paul1's House, Captain of the games, Editor of the magazine, President of the Debating Society, he gained a Senior Platt Scholarship and the promise of a leaving exhibition if he entered the University. On leaving school his Housemaster wrote to his father: "He has achieved the greatest distinction possible at a public school." Peterhouse College offered him a History Exhibition, to develop into a scholarship, but as he desired to enter into business life he did not proceed to tho University. He at once entered the house of Messrs. Gibbs and Sons, of 22 Bishopsgate, who that same year sent him out to their house in Valparaiso, Chile; there excellent prospects were held out to him, but at the beginning of the war he offered his services, and cabled to his father, "May I come? I want to." Receiving a favourable reply, he, with Brian James Brett Walsh, an Aldenhamian scholar, in the same house of business, started over the Andes, through the snow, on mule bsck, to Buenos Ayres, being unable to travel by sea as the German Fleet which sank the "Monmouth" was then in the Valparaiso roads. He joined the Duke of BedIord's Camp at Ampthill as a Second Lieutenant. At Aldenhnm School he passed the Military Certificate A., top, gaining unusually high marks; was a Sergeant in the A. O. T. Corps, and won the challenge cup for shooting. From the Ampthil1 Camp he went to the Front in France, and was to have received a Headquarters Staff appointment. He was killed in action on February 23rd, at. 12.15 p.m., shot by a sniper, and death was instantaneous. Numerous letters from his Schools, from Messrs. Gibbs and Son, from Ampthill Camp, and from the Front testify to his bright, spirits, bravery, and abiliy, while the Headquarters Staff of the Division to which he was attached sent a message to his parents that had he been spared he would have had a great future in the Army. His first School report began: "He is wonderful in earnest for so young a Boy." This was one of his many delightful characteristics all through life. His School companion, who crossed the Andes with him, died of wounds received at Gallipoli, and he was just such another bravo Ehglishman, who had that high sense of duty and patriotism, enabling h1m to give up excellent ptospects to serve his King and couzntry. They were of the same age, 22 years. Second Lieutenant E. E. A. Collisson was burried at Maricourt, the officiating priest being the Rev. G. R. Vallings, Chaplain of the 1/7th Gordon Highlanders. |
