abt. 1888 19 October 1915 27 2nd Lovat Scouts Lala Baba Cemetery, Turkey (including Gallipoli) Son of George J. and Annie Forsyth Grant, of 43, Northumberland St., Edinburgh. |
De Ruvignys Roll of Honour Forsyth-Grant, Ivor, M. A., Ll. B., Advocate, Lieutnant, 1/2nd Lovat Scouts, Highland Mounted Brigade, only son of George James Forsyth-Grant, of 43, Northumberland Street, Edinburgh, Advocate, by his wife, Anne, daughter of the late John McKerrell Brown, of 7, Eton Terrace, Edinburgh; and grandson of the late William Forsyth-Grant, of Ecclesgreig, co. Kincardine, J. P., D. L.; born Edinburgh, 7 February 1888; educated Edinburgh Academy, and University of Edinburgh (M. A., Ll. B.); was called to the Scottish Bar at the end of 1913; joined the Lovat Scouts as a 2nd Lieutenant about 1909, and became Lieutenant January 1914; volunteered with his regiment for foreign service, after the outbreak of the European War; served at the Dardanelles with the Mediterranean Force, and was severely wounded in the arm and leg during a reconnaissance in front of the trenches at Sulva Bay, 19 October 1915, and died a few hours after being brought in. He was mentioned in despatches [London Gazette, 13 July 1916] by General Sir Charles Monro, for gallant and distinguished conduct in the field. His Colonel wrote: "You will have heard that he volunteered for a dangerous duty and how galantly he behaved . . . I feel That not only the regiment, but Scotland also, has lost a good man." A brother officer, who gave an account of the duty he undertook, said: "The ground in front of the enemy's saphead, which is pretty thick, had to be reconnoitred, and last night Ivor and two men crawled out to do this from their saphead, and, in particular, to find out if the 'old house' was occupied by snipers or not. This wasn't the first time he had been doing this kind of work, and he was well up to all the tricks. The two men who were with him have told me the story. The crawled out on the left of the old mule track and got up to the house and into it and found no one there. The walls are half broken down. He said to the men 'The house is empty', and apparently the enemy must either have heard or seen them at that moment. Ivor got hit on the arm then, though the men didn't know it at the time. He lay flat and ordered the men to bolt, which they did for a little distance, and when the heavy fire ceased they crawled back and found him wounded in the left arm and left leg. One of the men took back word, and 2nd Lieutenant J. F. at once brought out a party of men to cover the bringing of him in, which was done in a very short time. He was very cheery then, and K. M. saw him smoking a cigarette as he was being carried down the sap. He was taken on a strecher to the hospital, and got there about 10.30 or 11 p. m. He died at 3.30 this morning. He died quite peacefully and typically of him, apologizing to the doctors for all the trouble he was giving them. All through the time no one could have given a finer example of pluck and absolute unselfishness . . . Every officer and man here have seen him on active service for about three weeks, and he has set us all an example of coolness and unselfishness which we shall never see the like of, and shall never forget; and I don't mean only after he was wounded. Of course, this is no surprise to us who knew him and what he was made of, but others who didn't know him couldn't fail to see in him as real a man as they will ever be likely to see . . ." The Doctor also wrote: "He was magnificently brave, and was so cheery in spite of pain. We gave him a cigarette and he smoke and talked as I worked." A brother officer wrote to a friend: "Ivor was always the central figure, with hgis big heart and big personality . . . We miss him terribly in the regiment, and I know the country has lost a great soldier. He was as brave as a lion . . . " A Member of Parliament, who knew him well, wrote: "I formed the very highest estimate of him, both as regards intellect and character. He was a peculiarly happy temperament, and he had a charm of manner all his own . . . He was the very model of what a soldier should be - full of courage, high in tone, clean in thought and feeling, and tender to the old and weak." He took a prominent part in promoting the Boy Scout movement in poor districts of Edinburgh, and was responsible for the formation of a commitee of University man with this object, and, speaking of his work at the Scottish Bar, the Scots "Law Times" said: "He was called on to conduct the important criminal case of H. M. Advocate v. Ryan, which involved difficult and important questions on the construction of an old Scots statute and the eighteenth chapter of Leviticus, and which was deemed so important that it was ordered to be heard before a full Bench. The ordeal was a severe one for a younbg Counsel in his first year at the Bar, but Mr. Forsyth-Grant conducted the case with so much ability as to earn warm praise from the Bench, and to excite the liveliest hopes of his friends for his future career as a Counsel . . . Mr. Forsyth-Grant was a man of the most purposeful and attractive personality." The Scots "Law Times" also said: "Many friends of all ages and walks of life throughout Scotland will mourn the death of Lieutenant Ivor Forsyth-Grant . . . He excelled as a sportsman, was a good rider and a keen and useful shot, and there were few games which he did not play well." Unm. |
