Holtby, Arthur William, Private, No. 27812, 15th Battn. (48th Highlanders), Canadian Expeditionary Force, son of Mitchell Holtby, of North Coate Farm, South Cave, Hull, by his wife, Charlotte, daughter of James Smith; born Pickering Marshes, York, 17 May 1890; educated Hilnwick-on-the-Wolds; went to Canada, 20 April 1911, and settled at Toronto as a Railway Rullyman; volunteered on the outbreak of war, and joined the Canadian Expeditionary Force at Toronto; left for England with the first contingent, 26 September 1914, arriving 16 October; went to France, 29 January 1915, and was killed in action at Hill 60, 27 April 1915; unm.

A local Canadian newspaper reported the death of Arthur William Holtby:
Cross Is Over Grave
Word has been received by Mrs. Spruit, of 67 Fairview avenue, of the death of Private A. Holtby, of the 15th Battalion, 48th Highlanders, who previous to the war lived at 37 Clinton street, and worked for the Dominion Transport Co. as a teamster.
A letter printed in an English paper, sent Mrs. Spruit by Private Holtby's mother, who lives at Cave, England, reads as follows: - "Dear Mrs. Holtby, - Having paid the last respects to your son, I thought you would like to know that he died in action. I saw him laid to rest, and have erected a wooden cross over his grave. I am sending you a photo that I found on him, and his letters I will burn unless I heard from you, as we cannot send a parcel from here. I suppose you will have heard sooner, but thought you would like to hear from one that saw him. Please accept the sincerest sympathy from one of the other lads at the front. Yours truly, Battery Sergt. Major Deck."
