Robert Abbott, William Cass and William Churchill,
men of Somerton, joined the Duke
of Monmouth to fight for "God and Liberty"
in June 1685 and did not return home.

The Royal Army under the Earl of Feversham
occupied Somerton for two days in July 1685
just before the Battle of Sedgemoor.

After Monmouth's defeat seven of his
followers were condemned to be hanged near
here in the town.

This memorial was erected by the
relations and friends of
Frances Lady Smith
in loving and grateful remembrance
of her unfailing kindness
and liberality
to the inhabitants of Somerton
1901
