Richardson, Nebraska, USA Son of George Porter Belden and May Margaret Belden, nee Heim, husband of Ruth Jean Belden, nee Hendricks. |
A local newspaper reports on 15 January 1944: Sgt. Don Belden dies in England Dawson, Neb. - Staff Sgt. Don Belden, 34, died Jan. 4 in Norfolk, England, his parents, Mr. and Mrs. George Belden of Dawson were informed. Sergeant Belden was a turret gunner and aerial engineer on a Liberator bomber. The cause of his death has not been disclosed. Surviving beside his parents are his widow; a daughter, Martha Amelia, three sisters and two brothers.
Another newspaper reported: Don C. Belden Dies in England Mrs. Don C. Belden was officially notified by the War Department Wednesday of the death in England of her husband, Staff Sergeant Don Belden, who was on duty there. Beyond ststing that he died Tuesday, January 4, at Sheringham, Norfolk county, England, no particulars were given, other than that a letter with more information would follow. It is not definintely known whether he was wounded in action, but it is presumed that this was so, as he was known to have taken part in some of the missions over Europe. Don was an aerial engineer and turret gunner on a Liberator B-24 Bomber. He was inducted into the service November 1942, at Hiawatha, Kansas, where he was employed as mechanic in the Conklin Garage. He took his basic training at Fresno, Calf. In December 1942, he was assigned to Lincoln Air Base for training and from there went to other air bases for further training. On July 12, 1943, he graduated from the Flexible Gunnery School of the Army Air Forces at Fort Myers, Fla., and went overseas on Oct. 6. In a telephone conversation this (Thursday) morning with Mrs. Belden, who has been in Oklahoma City, Okla., for several weeks, her father, J. F. Hendricks, learned that she had received a letter from Don, dated January 2, just two days before his reported death. He wrote in trhe letter that his mail had finally reached him, and there were 60 letters from home folks and friends. Don had had several changes of address since his arrival in England . . . |
