A newspaper reported the death of Robert MacDonalds New Deer Man Killed in Action Private Robert MacDonald, a native of New Deer, and a reservist in the Scots Guards, was killed in action at the front on 18th December. Deceased, who was 25 years of age, had been employed in Toronto, Canada, for 16 months, and left there to join the colours on August25. He proceeded to the front on 11th November. He was of a very likeable nature, was a great favourite with his companions, and much sympathy is extended to his mother, who resides at Gladstone Terrace, New Deer. This makes the third fatality among New Deer men at the front, the others being Private William Carle, Collegeford; and Lance-Corporal William Ironside, Main Street. |

"Transylvania", which was torpedoed off the Italian Coast 04 May; was rescued after being many hours in the water; subsequently served with the Egyptian Expeditionary Force from July 1917; was invalided home, suffering from illness contracted while on active service, in July 1918, and died at Beaufort War Hospital, Bristol, on the 15th of the following September.
