The Gprdon Highlanders, eldest son of the late James Youngson, by his wife, Maargaret (Hadagain, Midmar), daughter of Alexander Ewen; born Netherleask, Slains, co. Aberdeen, 30 April 1887, educated Free Church School, Sauchen, Cluny; was a farm labourer; joined the Gordon Highlanders 8 October 1914; served with the Expeditionary Force in France and Flanders from 1 May, 1915; was wounded at Festubert, and invalided home 12 August following; returned to France 6 November; was again wounded and sent to hospital in Camiers; rejoined his regiment 9 December 1916, and was killed in action 3 December 1917. His commanding officer, 2nd Lieutenant Porter wrote: "Both his platoon and myself are proud to have shared both the pleasures and sorrows of war with such a splendid soldier, and duly treasure his memory," and the Chaplain: "He was a favourite and a good soldier in every way, and his officers speak very highly of him."
