Captain
19 June 1890, Mathern 08 May 1915 24 1st Bn. Monmouthshire Regiment Ypres (Menin Gate) Memorial, Belgium Son of Joseph Wilfrid Stanton and Blanche Isabel Stanton, of Mathern House, Chepstow, Monmouthshire. |
Claude Wilfrid Stanton was born in Mathern, Monmouthshire, Wales on 19 June 1890 and was baptised in Hazleton, Gloucestershire, England on 21 September 1890. He had joined the Chepstow Company (E Company) of Territorials of the 1st Battalion of the Monmouthshire Regiment when the Territorial Force was formed under Captain Evill. He was soon appointed Adjutant, proving his capability. "..duties were carried out with the greatest credit to himself and to the men under him. He was beloved by all, and there was not a man of any rank in the Battalion who would not have laid down his life for him" (Chepstow Weekly Advertiser 29th May 1915) He was first reported to be one of the wounded officers at the 2nd Battle of Ypres on 8th May when so many men of the 1st Battalion Monmouthshire Regiment lost their lives. The Western Mail, 14th May reported him both as wounded, and killed in action. The following week a notice appeared confirming his death. An impressive choral memorial service was held on 21 May at Mathern Church. Betty and her eldest sister Elsie were there and their youngest brother Jack. Their mother "prostrate with grief" was too unwell to attend. To add to their misery, or maybe fuelling hopes, reports appeared in the papers in early June, saying that although previously reported missing, and then killed, Capt Claude Stanton had now been unofficially reported to be a prisoner of war, and in another, reported seriously wounded in a German hospital. Claude is commemorated on the Menin Gate Memorial to the Missing in Ypres, and locally he is named on the Mathern War Memorial and has his own memorial plaque in Mathern Church.
Wills and Administrations 1916 Stanton, Claude Wilfrid, of Mathern House, Chepstow, Monmouthshire, a Captain in His Majesty's Army died on or since 08 May 1915 whilst engaged with His Majesty's Forces in France. Administration Llandaff 30 December to Blanche Isabel Stanton, widow. Effects £739 9s. 11d.
The "Weekly Argus" reported on 29 May 1915: LATE CAPTAIN STANTON Memorial Service at Mathern "I Should Fall In a Great Cause" "If, during the next few days, I should have the misfortune to get hit, you must always remember it is not more than has happened to thousands of others, and has been donein a great cause." So wrote the late Capt. Claude Stanton before going into the battle in which he fell mortally wounded in defence, as he said in the letter to his sister a few days before, of a great cause. It is hard to think we shall never see him again - the young officer who was anti pating returning to England to be a comfort and solace to his widowed mother. No one could possibly help loving and admiring Claude Stanton, for he had - beautiful nature, and his splendid qualities made him highly respected by his brother officers and beloved by men who would have followed him anywhere. The words he used, and set out above, brought out the unselfish nature of the dead officer and deserve to be immortalised. |
