David Alfred Thomas was born in Aberdare, Glamorganshire, Wales on 26 March 1856 and was baptised in St Andrews Major, Glamorganshire, Wales on 09 September 1881. His parents were Samuel and Rachel Thomas, nee Haig. He joined the Cambridge University in 1876. His marriage to Sybil Margaret Haig was registered in Knighton, Radnorshire, Wales during the second quarter of 1882. One child of the couple is known: Margaret Haig Thomas (1883-1958).
