. . . Thus 3 July saw a resumption of the battle for the Ovilliers-La Boisselle lines on III and X Corp' front. By sheer determination some attacking battalions of the 12th Division reached the German lines at Ovillers but were overwhelmed once they entered the maze of trenches around the village. By late morning they had suffered 2,400 casualties. Things went marginally better for the 19th Division at La Boisselle, which managed to capture the entire village. A series of minor battles then erupted between German and British units, which ebbed and flowed around what little remained of the shattered buildings. At the end of the day the attackers had been forced back and the total gains could be measured in dozens of yards. . . . |
