He retired 03 June, 1911, to join the family business of John Harvey & Sons, Ltd., and became a Director in 1914, and also a director of Charles Harvey & Co., Ltd., Kidderminster, but retained his connection with the Army by joining the Special Reserve of Officers. On the outbreak of war he joined the 3rd Royal Berkshires at Portsmouth, and was promoted Major 26 September 1914, and took out a draft to the 2nd Battn. at the Front, 18 March, 1915; and was in command of that battn. for a month, being gazetted temp. Lieutnant-Colonel from 3 to 4 May inclusive. He was killed in action near Fromelles, during the advance against the Aubers Ridge, 09 May following. Major Harvey married at St. Mary's Church, Leigh Woods, Bristol, 11 August 1904, Eleanor Frances (Summerlands, Nailsea, Somerset), eldest daughter of the late Colonel John Whaley Watson, Bombay Staff Corps, and had four daughters: Eleanor Nancy (born 18 June 1906); Jeanie Elizabeth (born 19 June 1908); Joan Mary (born 29 March 1911); and Marjorie Prentice (born 034 October 1914). |

William Henry Fisher was born in Long Ashton on 19 August 1886, He was the second of Joel and Lilla Fisher's 11 children. He lived at 3, New Cottage, Long Ashton. He attended British Cathedral School and worked as a gardener's boy. On 22 September 1903 at the age of 17 years, William joined the Royal Navy. He saw action at the Battle of Jutland aboard H. M. S. "Dido" (31 May to 01 June 1916). William appears in the Long Ashton Roll of Honour (March 1915) as "Navy, W. Fisher, H. M. S. "Berwick" and the Bristol Times and Mirror on 12 February 1916 (Roll of Honour) as Fisher, W., H. M. S. "Berwick". Able Seaman William Henry Fisher was killed on 9th August 1917 when was his ship H. M. S. "Recruit" was sunk 3 miles north of the Noord Hinder Light Vessel. It was initially reported that the ship struck a mine, in fact it was torpedoed by UB16. William Henry Fisher is commemorated on the Plymouth Naval Memorial, Bristol Cathedral School Roll of Honour and the War Memorial in All Saints Church.
Western Daily Press on 18 August 1917: LONG ASHTON SUNK BY A MINE The Secretary of the Admiralty has informed the relatives of William Henry Fisher, A. B., that he lost his life on a ship which was sunk by a mine in the North Sea on 9th inst. He had done his duty in practically all the waters of the world, and took part in the Jutland battle. The father, who is an invalid, received news only three months ago that another son lost his life in France. |

Somerset, by his wife, Kate, daughter of Robert Clarke; born London 25 January 1893; educated St. Christopher's, Eastbourne; Marlborough, and Clare College, Cambridge; was a member of the Marlborough School O. T. C., and at Cambridge joined the University O. T. C. (Artillery); gazetted 2nd Lieutenant, North Somerset Yeomanry in October 1913; promoted Lieutenant 01 July 1917; served with the Expeditionary Force in France and Flanders from November 1914; took an active part in the First and Second Battle of Ypres, the Battles of Neuve Chapelle and Loos; transferred in October 1915 to the 19th Hussars; served with that unit as Signalling Offficer; in April 1916, was appointed Signalling Officer to the 1st Cavalry Division, Headquarters, in which position he took part in the various operations on the Somme front, the Battle of Cambrai, and the retreat of General Gough in March 1918; the following April was appointed Signalling Officer to the 2nd Cavalry Brigade, and was killed in action at the Battle of Amiens 09 August 1918. Buried in the De Luce Military Cemetery, south-east of Corbie. His Brigadier-General wrote: "As a soldier and a friend he was a great help to us, and as such we miss him." and his Brigade Major: "He was a splendid fellow in every way, an ideal signalling officer, and nothing was too much trouble; he will be a great loss to us all." Another officer also wrote: "He was one of the finest men I have ever known." He was mentioned in Despatches by F. M. Sir Douglas Haig for gallant and distinguished service in the field; unm. |
