James Anderson - Private, 4th Battalion Gordon Highlanders, was the son of Mr. and Mrs. James Anderson, Damhead, Fiddie, Skene. He was educated at Woodside, and belonged to the congregation of Skene Parish Church. Before joining the army he was employed as a farm servant. He met his death in the battle of Beaumont-Hamel, on 13th November, 1916, and is buried in Mally Wood Cemetery, France.

William Anderson - Private, 4th Battalion Gordon Highlanders, a brother of the preceding, was educated at Westhill School, and became a member of Skene Parish Church. He enlisted in June, 1915, having previously worked as a farm servant. He also see active service in France, and was killed in fighting at High Wood, on 23rd July, 1916. He was buried five miles south-west of Bapaume.

Norman Birss - Sergeant, 7th Battalion Gordon Highlanders, the son of James Birss, police constable, Skene, was born at Skene, 13th July, 1893. He was educated at Skene Central School, proceeding later to Gordon's College, Aberdeen, and was a student in Arts at Aberdeen University from 1912 to 1914.
He joined the Territorials in 1911, and was mobilised 5th August, 1914, with the 7th Battalion Gordon Highlanders. Birss went with his Battalion to Bedford, where he remained till May, 1915, then proceeded to France, where he was killed in action at Beaumont-Hamel on the Somme Front, 13th November, 1916.
His company officer wrote of him: . . . "He was an efficient and intelligent soldier, and one likely to rise in rank rapidly, had he been spared."

David Valentine Bridgeford - Son of the late Mr. James Bridgeford and Mrs. Bridgeford, Berryhill, Skene, was born 6th April, 1894. He attended Westhill School, and was afterwards employed in farm service. In December, 1913, he enlisted in the 7th Battalion Gordon Highlanders, and served in France, attaining the rank of Sergeant. He was killed in action on 13th November, 1916, at Beaumont-Hamel, and was buried there. He was a member of Skene Parish Church.

Frederick Bruce - Son of Mr. and Mrs. William Bruce, was born on 4th January, 1897, at Bethlin, Midmar. His parents afterwards removed to Lochside, Skene, and he attended the Central School there. Before enlisting he was engaged in farming. He enlisted on 14th July, 1916, in the 7th Battalion Gordon Highlanders, and served in France as Private. He was killed on 10th April, 1918, in France, and was buried there, in a place unknown. He was a member of Skene Parish Church.

George Cassie - Was born on 16th November, 1897, and was brought up by Mrs. Robson, Letter Brae, Skene. He attended Ley Lodge School, Kintore, and was engaged in farm work till he was called up as a Territorial in August 1914. He served in France as a private in the 7th Battalion Gordon Highlanders, and died at Bangor Hospital, as the result of wounds, on 13th August 1918. He was buried in Skene Churchyard.

He died while prisoner of war in Germany, at some place unknown, on 14th January, 1915. His place of burial is also unknown. He was 36 years of age. Prior to the war he was postman in Skene.

Charles Donaldson - Private, 2nd Battalion Gordon Highlanders, son of Mr. and Mrs. William Donaldson, Bogintory, Dunecht. He was born on 3rd June, 1894, and was educated at Cults Public School. He was in farm service at Concraig, and at the time of his enlistment in June, 1915, was in service at Mains of Cult, while at that time his parents resided at Upper Affloch Cottage, Skene. An illness, contracted during his period of training, delayed his departure to France, and after only four months' active service he was killed there on 4th July, 1916. His place of burial is not known.

John Donaldson - Lance Corporal, 2nd Battalion Gordon Highlanders, a younger brother of the preceding, was born 7th January, 1897, and was educated at Cults Public School. At the time of his enlistment he was a footman in the service of Lord Balfour of Burleigh. He served for two years seven months in France, where he was killed on 7th October, 1917. His place of burial is not known.

Samuel Farquhar - Lance Corporal, 7th Battalion Gordon Highlanders, was born 27th December, 1897, at Leddach, Skene. He was the son of Mr. and Mrs. William Farquhar, Tillycairn, Sauchen, and was educated at the Central School, Skene. Previous to the war he was engaged in farm service, but joined the Teritorials, and was called up a day or two after the war began. He served in France, was made Lance-Corporal at Christmas. 1916, and was killed at Aubigny, 31st March, 1917. His body lies in Aubigny Communal Cemetery.

James Forbes - Private, 4th Battalion Gordon Highlanders, was the son of the late James Forbes and of Mrs. Forbes, 18, Garlogie Cottages. He was educated at the Garlogie School, and was a member of Skene Parish Church. He enlisted on 25th November, 1916, having previously been employed in the paper mill at Peterculter. He served in France, but died of influenza in Craigleith Hospital, Edinburgh, on 9th November, 1918, and is buried in Skene Churchyard.

William Fraser - 4th Battalion, Gordon Highlanders, son of Mr. and Mrs. William Fraser, Earlick Cottage, Skene, was born in Dundee, 19th March, 1888. He attended school at Hawkhill, Dundee, and at Rosehearty. Before the war he was employed as a boot repairer.
He was called up 7th March, 1916, and was trained at Ripon. He proceeded to France in August, and was killed in action at Beaumont-Hamel, 13th November, 1916.
He was connected with the Parish Church, Skene.

George Ruddiman Greig - Private, 3rd Battalion, Gordon Highlanders, son of Mr. and Mrs. William D. Greig, Slack o' Larg, Skene, was born at Westhill, Skene, on 13th April, 1900. He attended Central School, Skene, and during the early period of the war was employed as a woodcutter.
After previously offering himself for enlistment and being rejected as too young. he was called up on 12th May, 1918, and underwent training in Colchester.
He died of scarlet fever, in Edinburgh, 7th May, 1919, and was buried in Skene.

Alexander McKenzie Hardy - Private, 1st Battalion, Gordon Highlanders, was born at Crombie Cottages, Skene, on 20th March, 1889. His home at the time of the war was Sawmill Cottage, Countesswells. He received his education at Westhill School. Previous to enlistment in February, 1916, he was at work in a shell factory. In August of the same year he was admitted by his Army Chaplain to the Communion of the Church and had his name placed on the Roll of Skene Parish Church. He served in France, and after the fighting at Guillemont on 18th August, 1916, he was reported missing and presumed killed.

He was killed at a place unknown, on 15th July, 1915, and was buried in the Public Cemetery, Estaires.

Alexander Ledingham - Was born in the Parish of Leslie, Aberdeenshire, on 20th August, 1893. Educated at Premnay Public School, he was engaged in farm work when he enlisted on 15th October, 1915, in the 4th Battalion Gordon Highlanders. He served as a Private in France and Belgium, and was killed on 23rd March, 1918, at Fremlicourt, and was buried there.

James Milne - Private, 3rd Battalion Gordon Highlanders. He was brought up by Mrs. Allan, School Croft, Garlogie, and educated at Garlogie School. After working as a farm servant, he joined the regular army a few years before the war. After being wounded and home on sick leave, he was on his way back when he was accidentally killed on the railway on 27th July, 1915. He was buried at Stirling.

John Milne - Private, 2nd Battalion Gordon Highlanders, was born at Aboyne, March, 1892; he attended Westhill School, Skene, and was employed at farm service until December, 1910, when he listed in "the Gordons." He was in training at Aberdeen and Colchester, and later was serving in Egypt, where the Battalion was stationed when war broke out.
Severely wounded in October, 1914, he was sent to a hospital in Ireland, and later to his home for a few months. Returning to Flanderns early in March, he took part in much hard fighting until that dark and unforgettable 25th September, 1915 - he has been "missing since Loos."

He enlisted in the 4th Battalion Gordon Highlanders on 1st November 1915. He served in France, and was killed on the Somme, near Mametz, on 4th August, 1916, and was buried in the Military Cemetery there.

He was the son of the late William Murray and of Mrs. Murray, Standingstone Cottage, Skene. He was educated at Skene Central School, and was a member of Skene Parish Church. He enlisted on 20th January, 1915, having previously been in farm service. He died of wounds, received in action in Belgium, on 2nd August, 1917. His body lies in Mendinghem British Cemetery, Proven, Belgium.

James Alexander Watson Aitken Ogston - A native of the Parish of Slains, was, before enlistment, in farm service at Concraig and Auchinclech. He enlisted at Aberdeen in October, 1915, in the 3rd Battalion Gordon Highlanders, and afterwards served in France with the 2nd Battalion. He was killed in action at Fricourt, on 26th March, 1916, and was buried in Norfolk Cemetery, near Albert Station.

William Allan Ririe - Private, 7th Battalion Gordon Highlanders, grandson of the late Mr. and Mrs. William Ririe, was born at Easter Ord, Skene, on 30th May, 1893. He received his education at Countesswells and Skene Central Schools, and was connected with Skene Parish Church. His home address was latterly New Street, Kintore, and before the war he was employed as a farm servant. He joined the army on 14th August, 1914, and met his death in France ten months later, on 12th June, 1915. He died at Boulogne and was buried in the Eastern Cemetery there.

Alexander Shepherd - Private, successively in the 3rd, 1st, and 2nd Gordon Highlanders, was born at The Stables, Skene House, in April, 1892, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Charles Shepherd, now residing at Hill of Corskie, Dunecht. He was educated at Lyne of Skene School, and was a member of Skene Parish Church. He was in farm service at several places in Skene and Echt, and at the time of his enlistment was a tramway conductor at Coatbridge. He went out to France in September, 1915, was wounded in the offensive of July, 1916, and again on 4th March, 1917, when he received wounds from which he died on 7th March, 1917. His body lies in Varennes British Cemetery, near Albert.

Frank Bandeen - Sergeant, 75th Battalion Canadian Infantry, was the son of the late George Bandeen and of Mrs. Bandeen, Roadside, Garlogie, and was educated at Westhill and Central School, Skene.
Before the war he had emigrated to America and was working in Ford's Motor Factory, Detroit, U. S. A. He served in France, and in the summer of 1917 was awarded the Military Medal "for conspicuous bravery" in an attack on the enemy lines. In consequence of being badly gassed, he developed lung trouble and after the Armistice had to enter the Queen Mary Sanatorium, Ontario, Canada, where he died on 25th January, 1920. His grave is in Mount Pleasant, Ontario.

Joining the army on 4th September, 1914, he served in the Royal Field Artillery in France as Bombardier. He was killed at Ypres on 6th June, 1916, and was buried at Bethune.

He was born on 27th May, 1889, was educated at Westhill and Central School, Skene, and before he joined the army on 21st June, 1915, he was working as a coal miner at Kelty, Fife. Early in the 1916 he was sent out to Mesopotamia, and fell in action on 22nd April of the same year. He was buried in Amara War Cemetery, 90 miles E. S. E. of Kut, Iraq.

William Duthie Grassick - Youngest son of Mr. and Mrs. Alexander Grassick, Wantonwells, Dunecht, was born at Craigievar Schoolhouse, where his father was Schoolmaster, on 8th September, 1897, and was educated at Craigievar and Kemnay Public Schools. He was accountant in the Aberdeen Branch of the Royal Insurance Company when he enlisted on 9th October, 1916, in the 15th Battalion Welsh Regiment, and served as a Private in France and Belgium. He was killed in the field N. E. of Ypres, on 22nd August, 1917. The place of his internment is unknown.

He served in France, and was reported missing after a battle on 3rd May, 1917, and later presumed dead.

George Morrison Low - Eldest son of Mr. George Low, Burnside, Skene, and of the late Mrs. Low, was born at Newton Dee, Murtle, on 20th August, 1891, educated at Central School, Skene, and was engaged with his father in farming before enlistment. He enlisted on 20th May, 1915, and served as a Private with the Scottish Horse and in the 13th Battalion Black Watch in Egypt, Salonika, France, and Flanders. He died in No. 55 Casualty Clearing Station on 4th October, 1918, and was buried at Doingt, near Peronne.

John Anderson Mennie - Staff-Sergeant, Royal Army Service Corps, son of Mr. and Mrs. James Mennie, Council Cottage, Peterculter, was educated at Craigton Higher Grade School. Before enlistment he was employed as a baker by Mr. Rae, Mason Lodge, Skene. He joined the army on 26th May, 1917, and saw service abroad. He was on his way home from Constantinople to be demobilised when he died at Netley Hospital, Southampton, on 17th February, 1920.

Charles Milne - Private, Highland Light Infantry, was the son of Charles Milne, Schoolhouse, Chapelton, Arbroath, and the late Mrs. Milne. His parents formerly resided at Moss-side, Letter of Skene. He was born in September, 1881, and attended school at Newmachar. When he joined the army he had settled in Motherwell as an insurance agent, and left there a wife and one child. He served in France, and after the great German offensive in March, 1918, was reported missing, and was heard of no more.

John Mitchell - Younger brother of Robert (above), was also engaged at home when he joined the army on 4th June, 1918. He was in the 3rd Battalion Scots Guards less than a month when he died, from the effects of influenza, in Bermondsey Military Hospital, England, on 30th June, and was buried in Skene. He was born on 14th December, 1998.
