GARRETT Mr. Peter John Newson Garrett, a former well-known resident of Oatlands Park, died from injuries received in a motor accident at Highcliffe, Hants, on Wednesday last week. Mr. Garrett, who was the son of Capt. P. B. Garrett, was a captain in the Home Guard at Highcliffe. When he iived in the Oatlands district Mr. Garrett was for some time hon. secretary of the Walton Poppy Day, and was also a member of the Weybridge Male Voice Choir and a special constable. He leaves a widow and three young children. The funeral took place at Highcliffe on Saturday.

In 1939, she worked in Bungsar Hospital in Kuala Lumpur. When the Japanese invaded in 1941, Olive and the other nurses made their way towards Singapore for evacuation. By early Feb 1942, Olive was among the crowds of people on Singapore dockside awaiting evacuation by ship, but the docks were under constant air attack. On Feb 13, during one of these air attacks, just as Olive was about to board the SS Kuala, she was hit and killed by enemy machine gun fire. Her body was taken on board the ship and she was buried at sea later that night. Information from Hampshire Cultural Trust. |
