The Benalla Ensign on Friday, 26 November 1943: Thomas O'Farrell News was received this week of the death during air operations of Pilot Officer Patrick Thomas O'Farrell, aged 21 years, the only son of Mr. Stewart O'Farrell, of Northcote, and the late Mrs. O'Farrell. Death is reported to have taken place on 22nd Septemober last. Deceased was born at Casterton, and on the death of his mother, came to live with his grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. D. O'Farrell, of Samaria Road, Benalla. He received his early education at the Blind Creek school, and later went to the Northcote High School. Open completion of his schooling, he joined the State Electricity Commission, and when he joined the R.A.A.F. two years ago, he was stationed at the city office. He went through various training schools, and after gaining his wings was sent overseas last May. He was stationed in England, and was over enemy territory on several occasions. It was during one of these flights that he lost his life. He was in charge of a Lancaster bomber. He was the possessor of a happy disposition, and his death at such an early age is greatly regretted. Much sympathy is felt for his bereaved father, and grandparents, and also for three sisters Kathleen, Joan and Helene, who are left to mourn their loss. |

The Argus (Melbourne, Victoria) on Thursday, 02 July 1942: Sgt.-Plt. Patkin Latest news received by Mr. and Mrs. Maurice Patkln, Queen's rd, Melbourne, of their son, Sgt.-Plt. Leo Patkin, is that, after flying Wellington bombers for the early part of this year, he volunteered for the new Glider Airborne Division, and is now a glider instructor at an operational area somewhere in England. Sgt.-Plt. Patkln was a departmental manager before he joined the RAAF in January, 1941, and was awarded his wings in July of that year. |
The Argus (Melbourne, Victoria) on Tuesday, 01 February 1944: Sportsman missing after raid on Berlin Flt.-Lt. Leo Braham Patkin, former well-known Melbourne golfer and squash player, who was recently reported missing in night operations, was captain of a Lancaster bomber which failed to return after a raid on Berlin. Only son of Mr. and Mrs. Maurice Patkin, of 19 Queen's rd, Melbourne, he was educated at Melbourne Grammar School and Melbourne University. He was a departmental manager at the Myer Emporium before enlisting in April, 1940. He had been a fine all-round athlete, having represented Yarra Yarra Golf Club and Lane Squash Club. Flt.-Lt. Patkin received his initial training in Victoria and his elementary training in Tasmania. After reaching Britain he was attached for a time to a Wellington bomber squadron. Subsequently he became a glider pilot, and for 15 months was a glider instructor. After transferring to a Lancaster squadron he took part in 15 raids on Germany, including 5 on Berlin. He married Miss Claire Benjamin. They have 2 young sons. |
