Miss Bald, Gifford, has received official intimation that her eldest brother, Private James Bald, A. S. C., has died in hospital. Deceased enlisted in 1915, and has been on active service for over 18 months. Private Bald, before enlisting was widely familiar as the driver of Gifford 'bus for fifteen years. The Haddingtonshire Courier on 04 August 1916: Gifford - Military Funeral
The stillness of a summer afternoon, and the beauty of surrounding scenery lent an impressiveness to a solemn ceremony witnessed here some days ago, when the remains of Private James Donaldson , 2/5th West Yorks., who died in Cambridge Military Hospital were laid to rest here with military honours. Preceded by a firing party and pipers playing "The Flowers of the Forest" the casket, covered with the Union Jack, was carried shoulder-high from the widow's home to the churchyard, inside the gates of which the firing party formed up at the "present" whilst the body was borne past them to its resting place. The firing party then formed up at the grave-side and fired a last salute of three volleys. In the interval between the volleys, the piper played "Lochaber no more". The bugler then sounded the "Last Post". The Commanding Officer of the H. L. I. battalion stationed at Haddington supplied the military contingent. Rev. J. Muir and Rev. J. Crocket conducted services in the house and at the grave. Private Donaldson, a native of Gifford, was, prior to his enlistment sixteen months ago, a gamekeeper on the Newby Hall Estate, Yorkshire. His ardent spirit, eager for active service, fretted that his Battalion had not been ordered abroad, and almost his last expressed wish was to have fallen in France. Deceased leaves a widow and one boy, three years old, for whom much sympathy is felt. |

Captain
16 March 1886 14 September 1914 25 1st Bn. Irish Guards Soupir Communal Cemetery, France Son of the 10th Marquess of Tweeddale and the Marchioness of Tweeddale, of 6, Hill St., Mayfair, London, husband of Lady Arthur Hay (now Mrs. Robert Leatham). |
The Haddingtonshire Courier on 25 September 1914: Lord Arthur Hay falls at the front
The news of the death in action of Lord Arthur Hay, brother of the Marquis of Tweeddale, and heir-presumptive to the Marquisate, was received with sorrow everywhere in East Lothian, the shock of the sad intelligence being especially keen in Gifford and the surrounding district, where Lord Arthur had spent his early years. He was the second son of the late Marquis, and was born at Yester in 1886. A bright and handsome youth, he shared the great popularity of his brothers among all classes. His choice of the profession of arms had for some years removed him a good deal from the ancestral home.
Much sorrow is also evidenced in the county town of Haddington, where the family of Tweeddale are almost equally familiar figures, and where stands the handsome memorial to Lord Arthur's grandfather, the famous "fighting Marquis" who was a veteran of Waterloo, and saw historic fighting in the country where his grandson has fallen. Deep sympathy is everywhere expressed, especially with Lord Arthur's mother, the Dowager Marchioness, who a fortnight ago was visiting in Gifford among the many old friends in all walks of life by whom she is so warmly remembered and beloved.
Sympathetic references to the deceased were made in Yester Parish Church and Gifford United Free Church on Sunday by the Rev. J. Muir and the Rev. J. Crocket, the Dead March in "Saul" being played at the close of the service in the Parish Church.
During the sermon the Minister made the following comments: It is of this I would ask you to think today when the horror of war has been brought home to us by the death of Lord Arthur Hay, which was intimated yesterday. Many of you to whom I speak have known him since childhood and have watched his career with kindly interest. Little more than three years ago we rejoiced with him on the occasion of his marriage. A few weeks ago we heard he was in France with his regiment. On Wednesday of last week the Dowager Marchioness spoke to me with pride of her soldier boy, but with the tear of the anxious mother in her eye, and now we learn he is amongst the fallen. |

The Haddingtonshire Courier on 20 December 1918: The late Private James Lawrie
In the course of the joint service in the Parish Church last Sunday, reference was made to the recent death in France of Private James Lawrie, Royal Engineers. For over twenty two years he had resided in Gifford with his widowed mother. He was held in general esteem for his transparent and sincere character, and was well spoken of by all who knew him. His death, as the result of an illness contracted in the discharge of his duty, was deeply deplored by his commanding officer, who has written of him in terms of warm appreciation. His memory deserved to be held in grateful remembrance as that of one who bore himself worthily and made the supreme sacrifice. Much sympathy has been felt throughout the community with his mother in the loss of her only son, in circumstances rendered the more pathetic by the fact that the announcement of it reached her just as hostilities were being suspended, and when it seemed that relief was at last coming to the anxieties which had burdened so many hearts. |
