A newspaper reported on Stanley George Holley's death:
Mr. and Mrs. G. Holley, of 66, Grove Road, Fishponds, have received information of the death in action of their son, Private Stanley G. Holley.
Private Holley joined the Somerset L. I. at the outbreak of the war, afterwards being transferred to the Devons. He went to France in Sept. 1915, and then to another seat of war. Pte. Holley before the war was in the employ of the Bristol Tramways and Carriage Co. as storekeeper for over seven years.

Military Medal

The birth of Renwick Stanley Britton was registered in Barton Regis, Gloucestershire, England during the third quarter of 1898 and was baptised in the Church of St. John the Baptist in Frenchay, Gloucestershire, England on 05 September 1898.

In WW1 he enlisted into the Army, joining as Private 7/6940 in the 262nd Infantry Battalion of the Training Reserves. He went on to be placed in the 1st Battalion of the Somerset Light Infantry as Private 28146, and was later promoted to Lance Corporal.
In 1918 the Battalion were in action on the Somme and in Flanders at The Battle of Hazebrouck , The Battle of Bethune, The advance in Flanders, and the Battles of the Hindenburg Line.
Presumably having been badly wounded, he was repatriated to England and died at the 5th London General Hospital, Lambeth, London, on the 28th of September 1918. He was aged 20 years, and was buried at Ridgeway Park Cemetery, Bristol. Plot 2088.
On the 11th of February 1919 he was posthumously awarded the Military Medal (MM) for "acts of gallantry and devotion to duty under fire".

Frederick George Room was born on 31 May 1895 and was baptised in the Church of St. Ambrose in St. George, Bristol, Gloucestershire, England on 28 November 1911. He was married to Ellen Elizabeth Sargent in Bath, Somerset, England on 09 August 1919.
He served as a Lance Corporal in the 2nd Battalion, Royal Irish Regiment. During a German attack at Frezenberg, Belgium, August 16, 1917, when the company which was in the forward line had many casualties, Lance-Corporal Room was in charge of the stretcher-bearers. He worked under intense fire, dressing the wounded and with complete disregard for his own life, he showed unremitting devotion to his duties. For gallantry in the face of the enemy, he was awarded the Victoria Cross Medal.
