A London newspaper reported Rev. Elijah Cobham's death on 04 October 1917:
The REV. ELIJAH COBHAM, C. F., who has been killed in East Africa, "whilst carrying in the wounded", was a graduate of Cambridge, Emmanuel and Ridley Hall, and was ordained in 1906 to Fishponds, Bristol. A year later he became assistant missioner of the conventional district of All Saints, of which, when it became a parish in 1911, he was the first vicar. In 1913 he offered to the Colonial and Continental Church Society for East Africa, and worked the intinerant mission districts in conjunction with his brother-in-law, the Rev. W. P. Low. Mr. Cobham's headquarters were at Nakuru. At the beginning of the war, when the German forces invaded British East Africa, all the British settlers were enrolled as a volunteer force, and Mr. Cobham went with them. He became a corporal as well as chaplain. Later on the force was disbanded, and Mr. Cobham returned to his ordinary duties. When the British Expeditionary Force was sent out, Mr. Cobham and Mr. Low, who had returned to East Africa after furlough, offered their service as hospital orderlies, but were soon appointed chaplains to the Forces. Their devotion to duty earned the highest praise.
