Thomas Spedding |
Rank: Service No.: Date of Birth: Date of Death: Age: Regiment: Cemetery: Add. Information: |
Private 1526 abt. 1893, Kinniside 09 March 1916 23 5th Bn. Border Regiment Railway Dugouts Burial Ground (Transport Farm), Belgium Son of Isaac and Hannah Spedding, nee Leece, of Well Bank, Haile, Cumberland. |
The birth of Thomas Spedding was registered in Whitehaven, Cumberland, England during thge first quarter of 1893. His parents were Isaac Spedding (1857-1913) and Hannah Spedding (1858-1897), nee Leece.
A local newspaper reported the death of Thomas Spedding: Private THOS. SPEDDING (HAILE), 5th BORDER, KILLED IN HIS DUG-OUT IN FRANCE. Information has been received that Private Thomas Spedding, youngest son of Isaac and Mrs. Spedding, of Haile, has been killed in his dug-out in France. Private Spedding was 23 years of age, and previous to the war was employed as a miner at the Ullcoats Mines, Egremont. Being a member of the Egremonmt Territorials (having joined twelve months before the war) he was called away in August, 1914. After the usual training he was drafted to France, being attached to the 175th Company Royal Engineers as sapper. He took a great interest in wrestling, and was always to be seen at any gathering where this sport was indulged in. He was also a prominent member of the West Cumberland Flying Club, and took a great interst in its welfare. The committee of thgis club some time ago forwarded parcels of comforts, tobacco, & c., to the Front, oine of which was consigned to Private Spedding, but unfortunately it came too late. Mr. F. Fawcett receiving the following letter from Lance-Corpl. Alfred Shaw, of Cleator Moor: -"To the members of the West Cumberland Flying Club. March 12, 1916. Gentlemen, -It is with the deepest of sympathy that I now write you these few lines. Perhaps you will have heard the sad news that one of your valuable members, Private T. Spedding, was killed by a shell (along with tweo others) whilst resting in their dug-out. It came as a shock to the boys of the 175th Company, all of whom had for him the greatest respect. I rteceived the parcel which you had forwarded to him, and the contents I shared out amongst his Pals to the best of my ability. Enclosed you will find the card which was found in the parcel. You might convey to his relatives our heartfelt sympathy from the boys of the 5th Border, attached to the 175th Company. -I remain, on behalf of the boys, yours sincerely, LANCE-CORPL. ALFRED SHAW (2145), of Cleator Moor." Private Spedding was a fine, steady young man, and was held in high esteem both by his workmates and his employers. He was home on a visit just before Christmas, and looked fit and well. |
