Carlyon Will Mason-MacFarlane
Carlyon Will Mason-MacFarlane Rank:

Date of Birth:
Date of Death:
Age:
Regiment:

Add. Information:
Captain

17 January 1891, Maidenhead, Berkshire
05 September 1916, Sohag, Egypt
25
7th (Queen's Own) Hussars
Cairo War Memorial Cemetery, Egypt
Son of David James and May Blanche Mason, nee Anstie.

Carlyon Will Mason-MacFarlane was the younger son of Lieutenant-Colonel David Mason-MacFarlane, C. M. G., 4th Seaforth Highlanders (T. F.), of Kindowie, Maidenhead, and of Mary Blanche his wife.
He was in the School from I904 to I908. He entered the R. M. C., Sandhurst, in 1909, and passed out first with honours, gaining the King's Gold Medal and Sword and six first prizes. He was gazetted in October, 1910, to the 7th Hussars and went with the Regiment to India, having previously taken an Interpretership in German. While in India he passed first out of the School of Signalling at Poona, first out of the Cavalry School at Saugor, and took honours at the School of Musketry at Satara. He was gazetted Captain in March, 1914.
When War broke out he had been home on sick leave and was on the point of returning to India as Adjutant to the 7th Hussars. He at once applied for a post in the British Expeditionary Force, and was attached to the 15th Hussars, and, later, to the 2nd Dragoon Guards, until October. He was then appointed a Signalling Officer to the 1st Cavalry Division, a post which he held till he was invalided home in September, I915. In January, I916, he was sent to Egypt, and was made Commandant of Signals for the Western Frontier Egyptian Field Force. Later on he was specially selected from the Signal Service to command a Company in the Imperial Camel Corps on account of his initiative and resource. He carried out several daring reconnaissances in the Senussi district, more than once alone and on foot, at night, and armed only with a revolver. At last, after penetrating with a small patrol into an oasis that no one had entered before, he was cut off by a body of the Senussi and killed, together with the junior Officer who was with him, on September 5th, I916. Age 25.
Both bodies were subsequently recovered and buried at the foot of the cliffs where they fell.
He was mentioned in Despatches of October Ist, I916.
Some sense of the loss caused by his death, and the esteem in which his abilities and character were held, may be gathered from the following extracts from letters written by Officers of high rank who knew him :-
"MacFarlane's death was a great blow to all of us, and a really serious loss to the Force; in fact, speaking as an Intelligence Officer, I can only say that it is quite impossible to replace him."
"I cannot realise that my dear old pal 'Mac' has gone. He was the life and soul of the 1st Cavalry Division, and we who knew the work that he did at Messines and the First Battle of Ypres appreciated his worth and character."
"When I was Commanding the 7th Brigade, R. H. A., he used to share our Mess, and he was the life and soul of it, and we all had the greatest affection for him. He will be deeply deplored and missed by all who knew him. His death is a cruel misfortune, and a great loss to the Army, for I feel sure his abilities were out of the ordinary."
"Captain MacFarlane was the ideal type of a British Cavalry Officer."
"He was an Officer of the most brilliant promise. Exceptionally gifted intellectually, he had read deeply and could think deeply; and with it all he was just as full of fun as the most irresponsiblel Subaltern in the Army. And he was such a lovable man. His death is not only a loss to the Service, very hard to replace, but a personal loss to everyone who knew him."
(Subscribed from the book "Memorials of Rugbeians who fell in the Great War, Vol. IV"
printed for Rugby School by Philip Lee Warner (O. R.), of the Medici Society, Ltd., May 1918.)
