A local newspaper reported following: Brother of Navigator Who Escaped Nazis Is War Casualty S/Sgt. Roger W. Krouskup, 24, oldest son of Mr. and Mrs. T. B. Krouskup of 2915 Sierra way, was killed Nov. 21 over Europe, a few days after he voluntarily returned to combat duty, according to word received by his parents yesterday from the war department. An aerial gunner who had been assigned to an instructor's post after flying 14 missions aboard a four-engined bomber, Sergeant Krouskup was back in combat flying with the command ship of a squadron, fighting the Nazis who had shot down his brother's plane last August. BROTHER ESCASPES The brother, Lt. Wayne E. Krouskup, a navigator, escaped capture by the Nazis and made his way back to England - a month after he had been listed as missing. Because he had escaped from enemy-held territory and if captured would be subject to possible execution, Lieutenant Krouskup was barred from combat flying and returned to the United States to serve as an instructor in navigation. He is at Ellington field, Texas. OVERSEAS SINCE MARCH The brief war department message informing Mr. and Mrs. Krouskup of their son's death was lacking in details of the action in which the gunner was killed. In his letter of Nov. 9, Sergeant Krouskup said he had returned to combat and had flown two missions. He was in charge of the gunners of the squadron and was to have been commissioned as a lieutenant. Sergeant Krouskup had been in England since last March, the same month in which Lieutenant Krouskup arrived overseas with another group. He had left his classes at the Santa Barbara State Teacher's college to enter the air forces in 1942. He was graduated from the San Bernardino High school in 1939 and the valley junior college in 1941. The third son of the Krouskups, Donald, is a Navy V-5 student, aviation, currently assigned to the University of Redlands for academic training preliminary to flight instruction. |
