On the night of 24 to 25 March 1943, the attack that the Luftwaffe launched against Edinburgh resulted in almost complete failure. Of the 52 machines of KG2 and KG6 that took off from their Dutch bases, five returned earlier because of technical problems and a further ten were lost through crashes or "enemy influences". Of the remaining 37 aircraft, only 14 managed to reach Edinburgh, the rest scattered their bombs on various alternative targets in northern England and Scotland. Weather reconnaissance flights over the target area in the late afternoon had indicated that there would be little cloud over the town that night. However, on arrival, crews found the district completely overcast, with a solid bank of cloud reaching from 600 feet to 3000 feet high. Unable to see the target, crews bombed on dead reckoning, apparently with only limited success. The aircraft of the 3rd Staffel Kampfgeschwader 2 crashed at Madan Law, Cheviot Hills, Northumberland. |

Started about 20.00 hrs with seven aircraft of the 6th Staffel Kampfgeschwader 54 to attack London carrying 500 kg HE and ten 50 kg incendiary bombs. At about 12,000 ft over the Thames Estuary very intense AA fire was encountered. As crew were on their first War Flight and unsecure of their position, they dropped the bomb load and headed for home. At that moment the tail was hit by AA fire and the pilot gave the order to bail out, the observer doing so with great speed and came down on the shore near Leysdown, on the Isle of Sheppey. He took shelter in an empty look-out post and gave himself up the next morning. An aircraft was seen to come down in the sea. The observer, although considerably shaken and frightened by his experience resolutely refused to give much information under interrogation. Unteroffizier Gerhard Klunker (Pilot) didn't find a grave in Cannock Chase cemetery. He is probably never be found. |

This aircraft was shot down by F/Lt R. C. Pargeter and F/Lt R. L. Fell in a Mosquito of No. 29 Squadron.
At around 21.55 hours Mosquito saw the JU-188 of Lt. Pavelsz to the east. A chase ensued and enemy aircraft wrongly identified as a Me 410 (was infact Pawelsz Ju 188). Several short bursts were given at varying ranges, 200 yds - 50 yds during the dog fight in which the enemy aircraft was constantly in and out of the searchlights, but the A.I. contact was maintained. Finally F/Lt Pargeter from slightly below gave a burst into the belly of the aircraft then pulled up the nose and gave a burst from 50 yds astern seeing the starboard engine and whole of fuselage a sheet of flame. Enemy aircraft went down in a slow spiral and was followed by search-lights and seen to blow up on the ground at 21.59 hours. A fix was then obtained N of West Malling. The A.I.(k) Report No.92/1944 states the following:
This aircraft was approaching the coast of Kent when a fire occurred in the tail unit. The radio operator and gunner baled out, and the aircraft crashed with the pilot and observer still onboard. According to local reports, some cannon or M.G. fire was heard in the air shortly before the aircraft was seen to crash. |
The crew was: Leutnant Friedrich Wilhelm von Pavelsz (killed) Unteroffizier Fritz Otto (POW) Unteroffizier Michael Hofmockel (POW) Obergefreiter Bruno Schievelbein (killed) Gefreiter Adalbert Thimian (killed) |

On its way to target when attacked by a night fighter at about 16,000 ft. It dived vertically into the ground with the starboard engine and outer wing on fire, wreckage being spread over a wide area. This aircraft was shot down by S/L Edward N. Bunting (DFC) and F/L C. P. Reed (DFC) in a Mosquito (MM 476) of No. 488 Squadron. The crew was: Leutnant Horst Becker (killed), Unteroffizier Gerhard Bartolain (killed), Unteroffizier Albert Lange (killed), Unteroffizier Günter Göcking (killed), Oberfeldwebel Heinrich Litschke (killed)
Extract from Form (F) Personal Combat Report 488 (NZ) Squadron S/L Bunting.
One Mosquito XIII S/L E. N. Bunting DFC (Pilot) and F/Lt C. P. Reed DFC (Nav/R) was airborne Bradwell Bay 21.55 hours under North Weald control (Controller F/Lt Fox-Male). On going over to searchlights pilot gave Gauntlet and investigated an arew of several beams, picking up a contact with the enemy aircraft dropping window (silver foil strips). S/L Bunting continues as follows:- I climbed from 16,000 feet to 20/21,000 on making contact which was at three miles range, 25 degrees above, 20 degrees off and estimated the enemy aircraft to be travelling at 160/170 mph. During the chase I was lit by searchlights many times, but closed in and obtained a visual at 300 yards of a Ju 188 doing mild evasive. I opened fire from 120 yards, dead astern with a two and a half second.vThe starboard engine began to burn and the enemy aircraft went down vertically to starboard. The fire went out temporarily but shortly afterwards there was a large flash from the ground. I orbitted and gave fix which control confirm as M.1735 and this is now known to be the position at which a Ju 188 has been found near Great Leigh's. |
