See below his brother Leonard Williams. |
The birth of Oswald Michael Williams was registered in Newport, Monmouthshire, Wales during the second quarter of 1885.
De Ruvignys Roll of Honour Williams, Oswald Michael, Major, 1st Battalion The Monmouthshire Regiment (T. F.), eldest son of Alfred Williams, of The Mount, Caerleon, county Monmoutshire, J. P., by his wife, Amy, daughter of Captain (-) Newall, 92nd Highlanders (who served in the Crimean War and died on his way home); and brother to Lieutenant L. Williams (q. v.); born Newport. county Monmouthshire, 27 February 1885; educated Ampleforth College; joined the 2nd (Vol.) Battalion The South Wales Borderers as 2nd Lieutenant 20 August 1904, which under the Territorial Act became the 1st Battalion. The Monmouthshire Regiment, and was promoted Lieutenant 18 July, 1906, Captain 18 February 1913, and Major 27 Septtember 1915 (antedated 9 May, 1915); obtained certificates for Musketry and Machine Gun courses at Hythe in 1908, and was appointed Battalion Musketry Instructor. The following year he delivered a lecture at Newport, on the Renaissance of Musketry, which was subsequently published, and met with the warm appreciation of Colonel N. R. McMahon, D. S. O., Chief lnstructor of Musketry, Hythe, and in 1912 he won the Officer's Cup for shooting; was a keen promoter of the Boy Scout, a member of the Staff, and for some years Organizing Secretary for Wales and Monmothshire; volunteered for lmperial Service on the outbreak of war in Aug. 1914; served with the Expeditionary Force in France and Flanders from February 1915, when his Battalion joined the 84th Brigade of the 28th Division; took part in the Second Battle of Ypres 08 May; was in hospital at Rouen during part of June, suffering from trench fever, and was killed in action during an attack on the Hohenzollern Redoubt 13 October following. His Commanding Officer gave the following particulars of Major Williams' death to his father: "He was killed by a bullet which struck him in the chest, and he died soon afterwards. He was at the time holding part of the Hohenzollern Redoubt, which we had attacked in the afternoon. The Germans drove part of our men out at that point, and it was while Oswald was holding them together that he was killed. He was simply splendid throughout. The position is still held by the British, and I hope he will be buried in the cemetery where his brother lies," and an appreciation by a friend, in the "South Wales Argus", dated 21 October 1915, stated: " . . . No careless, slipshod methods, no half-measures suited him. After manouvres he
would, in his tent, methodically describe the operations with a map, explaining the dispositions of the opposing forces. Then, and in later years, he had the gift that has been attributed to genius, the capacity for taking infinite pains. At the School of Musketry, in the Boy Scout movement, he resolutely set out to attain the objects he had before him, and he would not allow the word 'failure' in his undertakings. . . . Well, the lst Battalion did not die, but news has come that Oswald Williams is no more in this life. One can picture him as he stood 'holding them together' with the din and turmoil of battle all around him - cool, firm, courageous, rallying and encouraging his men to the last. And so he died as he had lived - clean and straight, as became a soldier and a gentleman." The Hon. Roland Phillips, in the "Headquarters Gazette" of the Boy Scout Association, wrote : "A few weeks ago another very gallant Scout carried his scouting ideals into at brighter world by laying down his life in France. I speak of Oswald Williams. These lines are written in order that his work in Wales may be permanently recorded in the newspaper that he loved above all others - 'The Headquarters Gazette'. For two years and more before the war broke out he had been devoting his time to the work of organizing the Scouts in the Welsh towns and villages, as well as in Hereford and Gloucester, and in his own native county of Monmouth. In Wales he had every kind of difficulty to contend with - political, sectarian and geographical. Yet he overcame them all by constantly journeying to all parts of the Principality, and by showing a deep appreciation of work already done, and an obstinate faith in the certainty of greater work being carried out in the future. By his unfailing optimism and dogged determination, he managed to stir the most distant village and the most lethargic town to the inspiration of Scout ideals and the thrill of scouting practices. There is no man, dead or living, that has done more than he to advance the progress of the Scout movement in Wales. If he won his way by tact and sympathy, it is equally true that he carried all before him by his faith in the reality of the Scout Promise, and in the value of Scout training as an educational and moral factor in the life of the nation." While at Ampleforth College he won his colours at football and cricket, and was one of the partnership that created the remarkable record in school cricket of 423 runs; unm.

De Ruvignys Roll of Honour Williams, Leonard, Lieutenant, lst Battalion (24th Foot) The South Wales Borderers, 6th and youngest son of Alfred Williams, of The Mount, Caerleon, county Monmouthshire, J. P., by his wife, Amy, daughter of Captain (-) Newall, 92nd Highlanders
(who served in the Crimean War and died on his way home); and brother to Major O. M. Williams (q. v.); born The Mount aforesaid, 03 November 1895; educated Arnpleforth College, where he was Dux. and New College, Oxford, but on the outbreak of war applied for permission to go to Sundhurst, and entered the Royal Military College in September 1914, being gazetted 2nd Lieutenant South Wales Borderers 11 November following, and later promoted Licutenant; scrved with the Expeditionary Force in France and Flanders from June, and died in No. 22 Field Ambulance, Vermelles, 11 September 1915, from wounds received in action while in charge of a platoon making an advanced trench. Buried there. The Rev. Francis Gleeson wrote: "The party was digging a new communication trench, and Willie (as I called him) was in charge. lt is dangerous work, as bullets constantly whizz about, coming from the German parapets. Your son, having to supervise the work and men, had necessity to get out of the trench and walk from one portion to another. It was while thus walking in the open that a stray bullet caught him. It penetrated his left jaw and emerged at the left side of his skull. It then continued its course and entered the body of a private near by. The private was not killed and the wound is not very serious, but the bullet lodged in his flesh. Poor Willie was at once placed on a stretcher and borne to the advanced Ambulance Station - No. 22 Field Ambulance. This was a journey entailing about half an hour, or 40 minutes. It was about midnight (Sat.-Sun., 11-12th). Having been placed in the Field Hospital, a motor ambulance arrived. Whilst being placed therein the poor boy died. . . . He was intensely loved by his battalion, and the men of his platoon are in deepest sorrow after him." Unm. |

10 January 1897 08 May 1915 18 1st Bn. Monmouthshire Regiment Ypres (Menin Gate) Memorial, Belgium Son of Mr. and Mrs. William Stewart, of Brodawel, Caerleon, Monmouthshire. |
De Ruvignys Roll of Honour Stewart, William Victor, 2nd Lieutenant 1st Battalion Monmouthshire Regiment (T. F.), only son of William Stewart, of Brodawel, Caerleon, county Montmouthshire, Mining Engineer, President of the South Wales Institute of Engineers, and late Chairman of the South Wales Coal Owner's Association, by his wife, Margaret, daughter of Hopkin John, of Tonypandy, Glamorgan; born Abertillery, county Monmouthshire, 10 January 1897; educated Blundell's School, Tiverton; enlisted 28 August 1914, and was killed in action at Festubert, near Ypres, 08 May 1915; unm. On the previous evening the 1st Monmouths had been moved up into thje trenches, in which it was found there was little shelter. The battalion was thereupon engaged throughout the whole of the night in improving the trenches. At daybreak the enemy commenced fiercely bombarding the 1st Monmouths, and continued doing so all the morning until about midday, when they broke through our lines to the right of Mons, and it was then that Lieutenant Stewart was killed by a bullet wound in the forehead. An incident which occured on the day of the charge at Neuve Chapelle (12 March 1915) is thus related in a letter which appeared in the "South Wales Argus" of 13 April 1915: "Our time at the redoubt was 24 hours, and our next 24 hours was spent at a farm about half a mile from the line. It was at this point that I essayed my most dangerous exploit. Our Captain asked for volunteers to carry ammunition to the trenches as their stock was getting exhausted. No sooner had the words been spoken than the volunteers were ready and I am pleased to say I was one of them. First we had to get back to headquarters to obtain the ammunition. Well, our party, under the direction of Lieutenant Stewart, safely fulfilled this part of our duty. Then our task began in earnest, and slowly we approached the danger area alomg the road. On arriving at a certain point our officer, Lieutenant Stewart, ordered us to open the boxes and carry 10 bandoliers each. Truly this was far more favourable for moving about, and at this junction we crept on to the side of the road and then right into the ditch. What with the heavy going, the excitement of being spotted, I can tell you it was far from pleasant. Step by step we advanced until we got to the communication trench, which was also knee deep in water. Still keeping up heart and receiving encouragement from our officer, we plotted on. With our goal in sight we were spotted, and didn't the lead fly! Still, there were no hits and we arrived safely, every man completely exhausted. After a brief spell we soon revived, only to stop with damp pants for some eight or nine hours, until darkness set in, when we marched back to our billets." |
