2066820 Sgt./Instructor Ralph Lawrence Seeger 6th Battalion West Yorkshire Regiment (later Royal Army Ordnance Corps) Ralph Lawrence Seeger was born in Bradford, Yorkshire, England on 28 February 1908, one of twin sons of Mr. Lawrence and Mrs. Annie Seeger of Bingley. The Seeger family were wool and cotton merchants descended from German wool merchants who came to Bradford in the nineteenth century. Like many before and since they came to this parish for weekends and holidays. Before the second world war they rented a couple of rooms at Reynoldson's Farm at Skyreholme and later bought a semidetached house in Appletreewick where Ralph and his brother and younger sister Margaret would explore this beautiful area, On leaving school Ralph became a textile designer whilst his twin brother Norman went into partnership with their father in the family's textile business. During his teens and early twenties Ralph and his brother and their cousin Douglas lllingworth went on walking trips including ones in Europe. ln 1928 they walked through Switzerland. Ralph was a member of the Territorial Army with the result that he was called up before WW II began. As a member of the Royal Army Ordnance Corps he later became involved in the latest technology of RADAR (Radio Aids to Detection And Ranging), a vital secret weapon in WW II. Ralph was acting as an instructor at Nottingham in 1942 when he sadly fell ill and was taken to hospital where he died on 19 August 1942, aged 34. He is buried in Bingley Cemetery. Remark: Provided different information regarding rank and unit than CWGC did. |
