ROLL OF HONOUR
Private Albert ("Bert") Thomas Meads , Machine Gun Corps. - He was the son of Mr. and Mrs. George Meads, Radford Road, Gawcott, and 19 years of age. His father has received the following letter, dated France, September 28th: - "Dear Sir, - I deeply regret to inform you that your son, Pte. A. T. Meads, was killed in action on the 21st inst. It will perhaps help you to bear up under your heavy burden to know that death was instantaneous, and that your son died at his post doing his duty, like the brave fellow he was. Only we who know what your son had to conteud with can appriciate his gallant conduct fully. I very much regret that it was not possible to recover any private effects. Your son was a very popular member of the section, always very willing, and the whole section join with me in extending to you their deepest sympathy. Yours truly, A. Way, 2nd Lieut.

De Ruvignys Roll of Honour
Watts, Herbert Edwin, Corporal, No. 10380, 5th (Service) Battalion The Oxfordshire and Buckinghamshire Light Infantry, 4th son of Alfred Watts, Proprietor of Victoria Temperance Hotel, Stony Stratford, by his wife, Mary Dabner, of Burham, near Rochester; born Halling, co. Kent, 27 February 1896; educated Earls Colne Grammar School, co. Essex, where he was an enthusiastic worker for the Scout movement, and organized the 1st Halstead Troop of Boy Scouts, afterwards becoming Scout Master; was employed as a Clerk with Messrs. R. Hunt & Sons, Ltd., of Earls Colne; enlisted 17 August 1914, after the outbreak of war; served with the Expeditionary Force in France and Flanders from 22 May, 1915, being employed as a Signaller to his battalion, and was killed in action on 25 September, 1915, at the Battle of Loos, while laying the telegraphic communications. Burried a little north of Hooge, about half a mile from the Ypres-Roulers Railway.
A comrade wrote: "His loss is most keenly felt among us, espacially by the Signallers with whom he was extremely popular. Personally I feel it terribly, as he was one of my best friends, and we had been together since enlistment. He was a son to be proud of and a most unselfish friend," and a member of the Halstead Scouts: "He was the backbone of the troup, and keeping it together required great perseverance and a strong character, which poor Herbert had. He was a true Scout, and always tried to keep one of the Scout mottoes: 'A Scout smiles and whistles under all circumstances', and, what is more, Herbert succeeded. He did not forget the Scout law even in France."
