A local newspaper reported in 1913 following; TINGEWICK - DEATH OF A CHILD. INJUGICIOUS FEEDING: T. F. Vaisey, Esq., District Coroner, held an inquiry in the Old Schoolroom, Tingewick, on Saturday, December 6th, into the cause of the death of Lilian Grace Dillow, aged 2 months and 1 week, the infant daughter of Edward James Dillow, which died suddenly the previous day. P. C. Amor was Coroner's Officer. The jury was composed of Messrs. S. Woodman, sen. (foreman), J. Burrows, G. Neale, G. Watkins, J. Pollard, J. T. Barnes, E. Judd, sen., W. Cherry, E. Pollard, sen., T. Barnes, W. S. Stanley, and F. Barrett. The Coroner said he did not think the enquiry would take very long. The poor little child died without having been seen by a doctor. It had been a delicate child from birth. The jury retired to view the body, and onn their return the following evidence was adducted: Annie Dillow deposed: I am the wife of Edward James Dillow, and live at Tingewick. The body the jury have just viewed is that of my daughter Lilian Grace Dillow. It has always been a delicate child from birth. Nurse Cadd attended me at my confinement, and has visited me twice since. I payed Nurse Cadd 10s., and I had the maternity benefit of 30s. It has had two fits - one a fortnight ago. I noticed the child was worse on Friday morning just before 8 o'clock. It worked it's arms and legs about. It never frothed at mouth till after death, which took place at half-past 9. I am not a strong woman and I have fits. I was paralysed down my left side on my furst confinement 14 years ago. My husband is generally in work. I suckled the child, and I gave it Bath biscuits. I fed it twice a day with biscuits. Nurse Cadd advised me to have a doctor, and I advised my husband to have a doctor. The child was very often sick. The Coroner said the woman should have called in a doctor, and the child was sick because it could not digest the biscuits. Edward James Dillow deposed: I am a labourer and father of the deceased child. I did not see her till half-past seven at night. I was hedge-cutting up the Padbury Road, which is three miles and half from my home. I left off work at 3 o'clock. I went into Buckingham from my work. I never went into a public house. I went to the surgery that morning at half-past 8 for the doctor, but he was not in, so I left word with a boy. It was a delicate child from birth. It had two fits - one a fortnight ago. I did not have a doctor because I thought he could not do any good. It ate very well. My wife never advised me to have a doctor. Nurse Cadd had never advised me to have a doctor. Dr. Larking deposed: I visited the house of Edward Dillow yesterday morning between 11 and 12 o'clock, and found the dead body of Lilian Grace Dillow. I made an external examination, and found it covered with sore round the private parts. It was very emaciated and weighed under ? lbs. It should have weighed 10 or 11 lbs. It was two months and a week old, and was born on September 29th last. It died at hgalf-past 9 that morning, was not told the message was urgent, and could call when I visited Tingewick that morning. I do not think Bath biscuits a suitable food for a child. The other children were drinking strong tea without any milk in it. I had not seen the child before. It had it ordinary clothes on when I saw it. I do not think the woman has any intelligence at all. She is a woman who is imbecile, and the child was rather dirty. I have not seen the husband drunk at all. I think it died from convulsion due to improper feeding and neglect. By a juror: There seems to have been neglect from both sides. The Coroner said it was nonsense that they could not call in a doctor, because persons could always claim the attendance of a parish doctor, or could call one in for hald-a-crown. The man was the most to blame, as his wife has no intelligence at all. Their verdict might be that death was caused by convulsion through injudicious food. A rider was added to the effect that this should be a warning to people in the future. The jury returned a verdict in accordance with the medical testimony. |
A local newspaper reported on 09 June 1915 following; TINGEWICK - NEGLECTED CHILDREN At the Buckingham Divisional Petty Besajous, on June 9th, before Mr. A. J. Roberts and Major Green, Edward James Dillow, of Tingewick, labourer, was charged with wilfully neglecting his two children, Marjory Violet, five years and four months, and Gladys Dorothy, two years and five months, to an extend that caused them unneccessary suffering. Mr. Law appeared to prosecute on behalf on the R. S. P. C. C. Defendant, in reply to the charge, said it was not his fault the children were neglected. As far back as last February the inspector visited the defendant's house and saw the children. At that time he warned both the mother and the father. He called on several other occasions, and in the summer time there was an improvement in the condition of the children. But in December last matters again became very bad. The children were in the most filthy state. As far back as December, 1912, at an inquest the coroner warned him as to the condition of his children. The defendant at that time replied that he could not pay for a doctor to attend the child, and the coroner told him that he could have applied for the attendance of the parish doctor. What made the case all the more sad was the wife's feeble-mindedness. Indeed, the case was considered by the inspector to be of no bad a character that he had the wife and two children conveyed to the Workhouse. The wife had given birth to another child. Previous to her marriage with the defendant the wife had a child, which was 14.5 years old, and was doing well. - Inspector Vine, R. S. P. C. C., corroborated what Mr. Law had said. Since February last he had made several visits to the cottage at Tingewick and warned the parents. The interior of the house was in a most filthy condition. He called in Dr. Larking, who examined the children, and at his suggestion an order was obtained for the admission of the mother and children to Buckingham Workhouse. - Dr. Larking said the woman was subject to fits and feeble-minded. - Harri8ett Dillow, mother of the defendant, said she had lived at the house three months and did all she could for the children. But the wife would not do anything. The children had plenty of food, but their mother would not attend to them. It was not her son's fault. It was true that her son kept the money and payed for what was required. If he gave his wife any money she went into the village and spent it. - The chairman said it was evident the two children had been wilfully neglected. There must be a conviction, and defendant woulkd have to pay £1 15s. The wife and children would remain in Buckingham Workhouse for the next three weeks. If he did not pay the £1 15s. he would have to go to prison for 14 days. |
