The rifle range in the Buchhorst Forest

Memorial - Brunswick, Buchhorst Forest, Lower Saxony, Germany

At this place, in the Buchhorst forest near Riddagshausen (Quarter of Brunswick), are located the remains of back stops of a former military rifle range. The back stops made of bricks are erected before 1900. In the 1930's, the time of the national-socialistic tyranny, were added the rifle ranges made of concrete. At that time were they part of a closed exercise area with barracks, walls and further rifle ranges.
The rifle ranges were used as training area, in the "Dritte Reich" additional as execution place for deserters, resistance fighters and probably also for prisoners of war, who were detained in Klein-Schöppenstedt (A small village near this place) and where they must carry out forced labour.

Between 1940 and 1945, after the death penalty for desertion was enforced in 1939, probably more than 9 people became victims of the NS-regime at this place.
The German Bundestag invalidated the injustice judgement against Wehrmacht-deserters in 2002.
The German Bundeswehr used the rifle ranges up to 1962.
The real number of victims is unknown. It is sure that more persons as only 9 were executed between 1940 and 1945 at this place. Only a few documents are available. Most documents were destroyed shortly before the US Army took over Brunswick.
