The Memorial for the Rieseberg Victims
Das Denkmal für die Rieseberg Opfer
04 July 1933 / 04 Juli 1933

The climax of the persecution began in July 1933 with the "Landmann Wave". The SS man Landmann had been accidentally shot by comrades. The chief of the State Police Friedrich Jeckeln used this death to break the communist resistance in the Brunswick state.
He selected 10 of the arrested and imprisoned KP(1) officials and supporters which were displaced to the AOK(2) and brought them to Rieseberg in the district of Helmstedt. At Rieseberg was located a confiscated union home what was planned to convert into a concentration camp.

The prisoners were already marked by torture and maltreatment as they arrived Rieseberg. Also here were the prisoners totured by the guards. Following the motto "10 for one" Jeckeln ordered the murder of the prisoners. A death squad of the SS from Brunswick appeared at around 11 o'clock pm and shot the prisoners. They were buried in wooden boxes at the wall of the Rieseberg cemetery.
A memorial was inaugurated at the 13th anniversary of the murder on July 4, 1946. The City of Brunswick ordered the exhumation of the victims of the shooting and brought the remains of 10 persons to Brunswick. The tailor Kurt Heinemann was transferred to his hometown Schöningen and was buried there. Who the eleventh discovered victim was could never be fully resolved. It was possibly a student named Hirsch.
A dignified interment and memorial place was erected on the Central Cemetery. The inauguration took place on July 6, 1958.

(2) Allgemeine Ortskrankenkasse, a public health insurance. It was occupied by the Auxiliary Police and was used as "protective custody" prison.
