Private 47558 02 November 1890, Badsey, Worcestershire 25 October 1918 27 15th Sqdn. Machine Gun Corps (Cavalry) formerly Queen's Own Worcestershire Hussars (Worcester Yeomanry) Tehran Memorial, Iran Son of John Ernest and Ruth Sylvester Cull, of The Sumacs, Badsey. Husband of Maude Marion Cull, of 4, White City Estate, Broadway, Hereford and Worcester. |
The birth (02 November 1890) of John Sydney Cull was registered in Evesham, Worcestershire, England during the fourth quarter of 1890 and was baptised in Badsey, Worcestershire, England on 25 January 1891. He was married to Maud Marion Richardson in Broadway, Worcestershire, England on 05 February 1916. |
Cull, ]ohn Sidney (1890-1918) - Private, Machine Gun Corps (Cavalry) John Sidney Cull (or Jack as he was more commonly known) was born at Badsey on 2nd November 1890 and baptised two months later in St James' Church, Badsey. He was the sixth of ten children of John Ernest and Ruth Cull. He had two older brothers (Walter John and Alfred Ernest), two older sisters (May Sylvester and Lilian Ruth), one younger brother (Edgar George) and three younger sisters (Hilda Annie, Laura Beatrice and Evelyn Lavinia). Jack's father was a master baker who had opened a bakery in Badsey in 1882 in a building on the High Street which he named The Sumacs (present-day No 18). Jack attended Badsey School from 1893-1903. On leaving school, he joined his father in the business. In his spare time, Jack was a chorister at Badsey Church. When the First World War began, Jack initially offered his services in August 1914, but was rejected on medical grounds. Two months later he was passed as "fit" and enlisted in the Queen's Own Worcestershire Hussars (Worcestershire Yeomanry). He then transferred to 15th Squadron Machine Gun Corps (Cavalry). At some stage, after a machine-gun course, Jack went out to Mesopotamia as a mounted machine-gunner, in which capacity he saw a considerable amount of fighting. This would have been some time after 1915 as he was not eligible for the 1915 Star medal. In 1916, probably just before going overseas, Jack married Maud Marion Richardson. A son, Robin, was born on 19th June 1917. Sadly, just weeks before the end of the war, Jack Cull contracted influenza and died at Bijar in modern-day Iran on 25th October 1918. News did not reach Badsey until 11th November. According to the Parish Magazine of December, "just as the bells were celebrating the armistice with a merry peal, Mr Cull received a telegram to the effect that his son, Pte J S Cull, had died of influenza." It went on to say: "Mrs Cull recently received a letter written by Pte Cull on October 9 in which he stated that, although there had been fatal cases of influenza, he was in the best of health. A memorial service arranged for November 22 was postponed owing to the Vicar's illness." The memorial service at Badsey was eventually held on 19th December. Jack's mother, Ruth, later received a letter of sympathy from one of Jack's officers, which was published in the April 1919 Parish Magazine: I have found your husband the most willing and obliging man I have ever met. I can honestly say that he was the best man I had under my command. We have been together under fire, and he displayed a coolness and courage any man might envy. He was most popular amongst all ranks and his loss is keenly felt amongst both officers and men. As Jack died of 'flu', one assumes that he was buried at Bijar where he died but his grave is not marked. Instead, he is commemorated on the Tehran Memorial in Iran. Jack's grieving parents, John and Ruth Cull, remained in Badsey for the rest of their lives. Jack's widow, Maud, was living at 4, White City Estate, Broadway, at the time that the Commonwealth War Graves Commission were last in touch with her regarding her husband's death. She did not remarry and died in the Croydon area in 1981. Jack's son, Robin, died in the Ipswich area in 1988. © The Badsey Society |

The Evesham Journal on 03 July 1915 (A postcard from Wilford Charles Figgitt) I am in the pink again now, after having a slight touch of fever a forthnight ago. It made me feel a bit queer, I am tell you. We have been in the trenches for five days after having a rest for ten, but we have had it pretty quit this time for once. We relieved the Indians in a fresh quarter altogether to what we have been before. We are living like toffs now, our only shortage being bread, of which we only get half a pound a day. We get suppers when we are out of the trenches - young 'spuds' and green peas, quite a treat. We have had several long marches - about 20 mile jobs. I can stick it all right, but it knocks some out. I saw Lord Kitchener the other day when he passed on the road to Lillers. |

Guardsman 23203 abt. 1887 29 October 1918 31 King's Coy. 1st Bn. Grenadier Guards Broadway (St. Eadburgh) Churchyard, Worcestershire, England Husband of Millicent Annie Sysum, formerly Folkes, of 37, Spring Meadow, Lydney, Gloucestershire. Born at Broadway and served in France. |
Alfred Folkes was born in Broadway in 1887, the seventh son of William Smith Folkes from Broadway, and Alice Folkes, nee Parker from Mickleton. Alfred was baptised at St. Michael's Church on 26 March 1887. Alfred's parents had married on 16 February 1871 in the parish church of St. Peter and St Paul, Witton Lane, Aston, near Birmingham, and they had moved to live on the High Street, Broadway, shortly after their marriage. Alfred's father initially worked as a baker but by 1887 was working as a painter and decorator joining the family's painting and decorating business in the village. By 1911 the family had moved to Learnington Road. After
Guardsman Alfred Foikes, leaving school Alfred worked as a general labourer but he later joined (Berrows Worcester Journal) the Gloucestershire Constabulary and moved away from Broadway. In early 1915, Alfred married Millicent Annie Dixon and shortly afterwards enlisted as a Private with the 1st Battalion Grenadier Guards. Alfred was posted to the Western Front on
23 October 1915 where he served with his battalion, part of the 3rd Guards Brigade. During the autumn of 1918 Alfred was honourably discharged from the Army with the Silver War Badge. Alfred returned home to Gloucestershire but was one of the many who contracted influenza during the 1918-19 flu pandemic. He died a couple of weeks later from pneumonia, aged 31 on 29 October 1918, at Frampton-on-Severn.
Remark: According to church records, Alfred Folkes married Millicent Annie Butler at St. Mary's Church in Frampton on Severn, Gloucestershire, England on 3 March 1918. |
