Wilstone Village Newsletter of June 2006: In 1942, aged 19, Robert was called up to the army and posted to 1st Battalion, the Oxfordshire and Buckinghamshire Light Infantry. In 1944 the battalion was sent to France to re-enforce the recent D-Day landings (6th June). Shortly afterwards fighting near Caen, he was hit by two bullets. His wallet stopped the first one, but he was not so fortunate with the second which badly wounded him. Robert was flown back to the UK by the Canadian Royal Air Force, and taken to a military hospital in Wales where he died from his wounds. |
