Private 5176 abt. 1896 27 September 1916 20 4th Bn. Yorkshire Regiment Thiepval Memorial, France Son of Jeremiah H. and Margaret Ann Horn, of Burtersett, Hawes, husband of Jane Ann Horn, of Burtersett, Hawes, Yorkshire. |
John Horn's father, Jeremiah, born at Leyurn, and in 1900 moved to Burtersett near Hawes, where Jeremiah worked as a stonemason and hewer of rock at Burtersett Quarry. Their three children, John, Anthony and George, had all been born in Leyburn. John, working at the quarry like his father, enlisted at Askrigg in October 1915, joining the 4th Battalion Yorkshire Regiment. He married a local girl, Jane Ann Dinsdale, in February 1916 and by the time of his death in September 1916, a child had been born. Embarking for France in April 1916, the Battalion was not called upon to take part in the Battle of the Somme until September 15th, when the attack supported by tanks, began. The Battalion held the line reached for the next two days, under heavy shell fire, which caused many casualties. Soaked through and exhausted, they were relieved on September 19th. The plan for September 26th was to attack and capture the German trenches running from Flers. The Battalion attacked at 11p.m. in conjunction with the 5th Durham Light Infantry but by mistake the Durhams did not attack and the 4th Battalion found themselves in the German trenches with both flans exposed and were driven out by strong counter-attacks on September 27th. The losses suffered were large and during the German counter-attack, John William Horn was killed. He was posted as missing and it was not until early 1917 that Jane Horn was officially notified that her husband had been killed. |

De Ruvignys Roll of Honour
Lodge, Bernard Grime, 2nd Lieutenant, 4th Battn. The Durham Light Infantry, son of John James Grime Lodge, of Yorebridge, Askrigg, Yorkshire, by his wife, Sarah Ann; and nephew of Mrs. W. Balderston, of Yorebridge House, Askrigg; born Dent, Yorkshire, 23 March, 1894; educated Minster Yard School, York; Yorebridge Grammar School, and Giggleswick School, Settle, Yorkshire; entered the employ of Messrs. Barclay & Co., Bankers; enlisted in Dec. 1914, in the 19th Universities and Public Schools Battalion The Royal Fusiliers; served with the Expeditionary Force in France and Flanders from Nov. 1915; returned to England, and joined an Officers' Cadet Corps; obtained a commission in the Special Reserve of Officers 10 August 1916; returned to France, and was attached 10th Battalion The Durham Light Infantry: became Battalion Bombing Officer and Intelligence Officer; was killed in action 24 August 1917, at Inverness Copse. His Colonel wrote: "It is with the deepest sympathy I write to tell you of the death in action of your charming boy, who was my Intelligence Officer. A braver, cooler and more reliable officer could not be found. He had done wonderfully gallant work on patro on numerous occasions, and whatever the job he had to do, I could absolutely rely on his doing it thoroughly. 1 know no offiicer in the battalion I could
have spared less than he. He was brave as a lion. We were counter-attacked at 4.30 a.m. on the 24th, and I turned out all the men at H. Q. He, without any orders, dashed off with the leading men right up to the front where danger threatened. I don't know how I shall replace him, as not only was he valuable as an officer, but I was very fond of him, as were all of us." His Adjutant wrote: "We shall never get another Bombing Officer up to his standard." Another officer wrote: "I cannot tell you how we miss your lad. He was one of the most capable and certainly the most popular and coolest officer that has served with us since the formation of the battalion. It will be some time before we can get used to the loss of his charming personality. From my own point, I simply loved him; we were very much together. Even now I cannot realize he has gone from us." He was mentioned in Despatches [London Gazette, 21 December 1917], by F. M. Sir Douglas Haig, for gallant and distinguished service in the field; unm.

The birth of James Graham Preston was registered in Aysgarth, Yorkshire, England during the fourth quarter of 1897. |
A newspaper wrote:
Village's poignant memory of lost son A BUGLE last played by a young Askrigg soldier who died in the First World War sounded the traditional Last Post and Reveille at a candlelit ceremony in the village's market square on Monday night. More than 250 villagers and visitors gathered to hear Brian Woof, of Hawes Silver Band, sound James Preston's bugle as a candle burned in the window of his former home, West End House. The service of prayers, poems and silent reflection at the market cross was part of the nationwide Lights Out initiative to mark the centenary of Britain's entry into the "War to end all wars". As lights were extinguished and candles lit, Dr. Christine Hallas reminded the gathering of the sacrifice of Private James Graham Preston of the 18th Battalion Lancashire Fusiliers, who was shot on his 20th birthday in the Ypres Salient, and died days later in a French hospital on November 2, 1917. Known as Jim, he had been a member of St. Oswald's Church choir, a Sunday school pupil and teacher, and was a student at Beckett Park Teacher Training College in Leeds with his cousin, Dick Chapman, when he volunteered for the Army in 1915. "He twice refused a commission, preferring to remain a private and a bugler. His bugle was returned to West End House after his death and we believe it has not been played since," said Dr Hallas. She also read out Jim's last letter home as he lay wounded: "We are on the sea front and I can sit up in bed and look out of the window watching the waves and the boats going across to Blighty. I hope to be on one of the latter soon," he wrote, four days before he died. |
