The Evening Post on 30 August 1917: BROUGHT HOME TO DIE. Fate of a Bristol Prisoner of War. VICTIM OF GERMAN FIENDS.
The death occurred sudddenly on Tuesday at the Roya1 Infirmary (Base) Section of the Second Soouthern General Hospital, of Private William Toogood, Gloucester Regiment, who was repatriated reoently after enduring great hardship as prisoner of war in Germany. He was the son of Mr. S. Toogood, of 98, Soundwell Road, Kingswood, and prior to the war was in the employ of the Bristol Corporation (electric light department). A prisoner since October 20th, 1914, he was able to tell harrowing tales of those early and bitter days of the war. Accommodation for prisoners was than very deficient in Germany, and the acrimony of our enemies did not urge them to consider the comforts of prisoners. Private Toogood told how, upon their being taken prisoners, they were locked in train trucks, wounded and unwounded alike, for two days without bread or water. Finally they arrived at the prison camp. There were also 15,000 Russians, besides other Allied prisoners. Here they were driven, like dumb cattle, into a barbed wire pen. There was no accommodation of any kind, sanitary or otherwise. There they crowded together to find sleep as best they could on that late October night. The Russians dug holes in the ground, and Englishman and Russians huddled together in fraternal commiseration. Then followed days of extreme hardship and starvation. Black bread was doled out once per day - not handed to each prisoner singly, but brought, out in quantity, and placed at a certain point of the camp. The hunger-mad prisoners rushed for it, and each man took his chance. As hunger knows no law, many a prisoner went breadless. A month of this sort of camp life brought with it a plague of typhus. Typhus cases were put in camp hospital, and Private Toogood related how he lay for three weeks on a bed where water dripped from the roof. There was no medical attendance whatever, and only a Russian to give them their food. This meant they were practically left to die and death did oome to 24 of their number. The crowning act of cruelty was when these men were taken from hospital, and put in a subterranean enclosure without daylight for two days. Private Teogood was clad only in a pair of Russian trousers and a blanket, with one boot. A foot of snow covered the ground. After two days they were let loose to go to camp again. After a struggle, Toogoord reached the barracks, where he found others he knew, but it was only by inquiry they recognised each other. "We had to look at each other, and ask one another our names," related Toogood. "ere we could recognise each other, so emaciated were we, mere walking skeletons, too weak to destroy the vermin on our bodies." Exposure, ill-nutrition, and neglect brought on the disease from which Toogood died. Robust and powerful when he first went to France in 1914, he hecame a victim of tubercular disease, both of throat and lungs. At the last ho oould speak oniv with an effort, and then in an almost inaudible whisper". He suffered from terrible paroxysms of ooughing. Private Toogood was one of the men whom the Lord Mayor recently visted in hospital. Tho funeral will take place tomorrow morning, the first portion of the service being held at 11 o'clock at the Broadmead Baptist Chapel. The interment will be in the Soldiers' Corner at Arnos Vale Cemetery. The Lord Mayor will be unable to attend owing to absence from Bristol, but will send his carriage. |
The birth of William Toogood was registered in Keynsham, Somerset, England during the third quarter of 1886 and was baptised in the Church of the Holy Trinity in Kingswood, Gloucestershire, England on 12 August 1888. |

Private 3249 08 November 1893, Sevenhill, South Australia 04 September 1916 22 27th Bn. Australian Infantry, A. I. F. Bristol (Arnos Vale) Cemetery, Bristol, UK Son of John Henry and Hannah Penna, of 77, Weller Street, Gordwood Park, South Australia. Born at Sevenhills, South Australia. |
The "Observer" (Adelaide, South Australia) reported on the death of Royal Edward Penna on 30 September 1916: LATE PTE. R. E. PENNA Mr. and Mrs. J. H. Penna, of Weller-street, Goodwood Park, have been advised that their son, Pte. R. E. Penna, has died of wounds at an hospital in England. The deceased, who was a grandson of the late Mr. Edward Penna, of Sevenhills, went into camp in August of last year, and left for the front in January last. He reached France in March. Previous to enlisting he worked in his father's business, and was also an enthusiastic worker in the Unley Methodist Church and Sunday School. He was highly esteemed by a large number of friends.
The "Australian Christian Commonwealth" (South Australia) wrote following on 06 October 1916:
UNLEY ROLL OF HONOUR The roll of honour in the Unley Methodist Church, like those of other Churches, is being consecrated by the highest sacrifice. To the list of those who have already laid down their lives for God and Home and Empire is now added that of Roy E. Penna, the son of Mr. and Mrs. J. H. Penna, of Goodwood Park. Private Penna died of wounds in the Beaufort Hospital, Bristol, England, on September 4. He went into camp on August 5 last year, left for the front on January 12 this year, spent a month in Egypt, arrived in France in March, entered the trenches on June 1, was reported wounded on
August 30, and died on September 4. He was a private in the 7th Reinforcements of 27th Infantry. Private Penna was born at Sevenhills, came to Adelaide with his parents sixteen years ago, and was a scholar in the Kent Town and Pirie Street Sunday schools, until the family removed to Goodwood Park, when he became a member of the Unley Sunday school. He made his decision
for Christ, and was publicly recognized as a member of the Church during the ministry of the Rev. T. Geddes White, and at once became an active member of the intermediate society and its superintendent. He was the secretary of the young men's Bible
class, of which Mr. S. Parsons was the teacher. High tribute is paid to his character as a Christian and a son - "earnest in Christian work and devoted to his people, a reliable and unostentatious worker." Of the forty "brave boys" whose names appear on the Unley honour roll two have returned - F. J. W. Ward and L. E. Clarke - and six of them have given their lives even unto death. W. B. Dickinsen died of wounds August 22, 1915, and H. E. Ellis died in Egypt on January 9, 1916. Since
then Lieutenant Percy E. Jackson, Privates C. E. Lewis and C. D. Cottle have been killed in action, and now to them is added Roy E. Penna. "died of wounds." These are of that great company of heroic dead who counted not their lives dear unto them in the discharge of their duty, the defence of the Empire's honour, the deliverance of the world from the menace of frightfulness
and hateful militarism, and in the supreme endeavour to bring in the kingdom of universal justice, peace, and love. |

DEATH OF MR. ROY RICHARDS. Mr. W. E. Richards, managing director of Hill, Clark, and Co., Ltd., has been advised by cable of the death of his youngest son, Roy, in England, on the 26th November. The first news of his being wounded was to the effect that it was not serious, but, a further intimation from the military advised "dangerously ill, gun shot wound
in chest", and apparently pneumonia supervened after his arrival at hospital in England. Roy, who was the first of Mr. Richards' four sons to enlist, was the only one connected with the business, where he was universally popular. Of a cheerful, bright, disposition, he made many friends, both in the office and outside, and his loss is deeply regretted by all, and a great blow to his parents. He was also among the list of the staff and his home centre of friends to enlist nearly two years ago, being attached to the 19th Battalion Machine Gun Section, which landed in Gallipoli simultaneously with the British Forces at Suvla Bay, moving across to link up with the latter, and subsequently he was chiefly at "Qninn's Post", and "Camerons," remaining 0n the Peninsula until the evacuation. After going to France he was attached to the 5th Australian Machine Gun Section, being in action at Armentieres and Pozieres, and at the time of his death was one of three left, out of the original section leaving Australia. His first and only furlough was for eight days in England in September last, and it was evident that he was wounded soon after his return to the front from his holiday. At the time of his death he was a Corporal, and from letters apparently was in a position of great trust in the fighting line. His letters were always cheerful, full of hope, and he was very proud not only of being an "Anzac", but "Pozieres-Anzac", which is a great reputation to have achieved. He gave for his country a good young life, which was full of promise, and is deeply mourned by all with whom ho was aasociated.
The "Mugdee Guardian and North-Western Representative" (New South Wales) on 11 December 1916: DEATH OF PRIVATE ROY RICHARDS The many friends of Mr. W. E. Richards, managing director of Hill, Clark and Co., Ltd., will be sorry to learn of the death in England of his youngest son, Roy, from pneumonia, following upon a gun shot wound received in France. A lad of only 22 years he responded to the country's call close upon two years ago, and took part in a deal of fighting both in Gallipoli and France, notably Quinn's Post and Poziers in connection with the 19th Battalion machine gun section, and was brimful of pluck. He was a young man of great promise, having a very fine nature, which endeared him to all he met or was associated with, and is another of the many sad penalties connected with this unfortunate war. |

The "Border Watch" (Mount Gambier, South Australia) on 20 November 1917: THE LATE PRIV. F. G. ROBINSON
Mrs. Robinson, Mil Lel, has received the following letter from the doctor who attended her husband in the Bishop's Knoll Hospital, Bristol: "Dear Madame, - You have no doubt been notified of the death of your husband. Privat Frederick George Robinson, 48th Battalion, A. I. F., on the 27th August, in my hospital, from septicaemia and pneumonia, supervening upon very severe gunshot wounds on the left thigh. I can assure you that everything that was humanly possible from a medical and nursing standpoint was done for him, but it was not to be. We had nearly cured him of his wounds, but indirectly the poison had got right through his system. As no doubt he has told you, we had had him out walking about in the garden, with the aid of crutches, and you can imagine how greatly we were, from a hospital point of view, disappointed when he had to take to his bed again. The sister of his ward devoted herself to him, and no one could have had more constant or devoted nursing. We all felt your husband's death very greatly, for he was with us for over four months, and during that long and dreary time he endeared himself to all who came in contact with him, by his cheerful patience and bravery, although at times suffering great pain. I am happy in being able to tell you that for some time before his death I feel certain that he suffered no pain. I wrote a few lines in our hospital magazine for this month, which I hope to send you in about, a week. He was attended by the Presbyterian minister during his last days, and also by my Senior - Chaplain, Bishop, Clifford (Church of England), who I saw a great deal of two or three days a week during his stay here, I was very pleased it happened that he received a letter from you which he was able to read and no doubt understand just before his mind began to wander, which I know must have been a great consolation to him, so you can have the happinness of thinking that you and his children must have been in his mind to the last. We buried him with military honors on the 29th August in the 'Soldiers' Corner' at Arno's Vale Cemetery, Bristol, after the first part of the service had been taken at the chapel of the 2nd Southern General Hospital, of which this is a part. The Australian military authorities are sending a photo, of each man's grave, which I hope you will receive in due course. Allow me to offer you my deepest sympathy at the terrible loss you and your children have suffered, and I hope it may be a comfort for you to know that your husband lived amongst good friends for the last months of his life, for although this place is a military hospital, we all take a delight in making it a home for these Australian boys, who are so far from home and their loved ones. Your husband's few effects were sent to the military Australian authorities in London, who will, no doubt, forward them to you. As I thought you would like souvenirs from the grave I am enclosing with this ribbons and cards from the crosses and wreaths which covered the coffin and gun carriage, I also enclose some letters that have reached this place, and a list of articles sent by me to the A. I. F. headquarters, London. - Yours faithfully, Robt. Bust." Mrs Robinson also received two kind letters from Nurse A. M. Hall-Houghton. The first letter was written on August 23, soon after he was admitted to Bishop's Knoll, Hospital, in Bristol, and describes his progress, which at that time was satisfactory, although his right lung was giving trouble and his temperature was high. She wished Mrs. Robinson could be with them, but said they were doing their best for her Husband. The next letter from Nurse Hall-Houghton is dated September 6, 1917, and informs her of his death, it is a long, kind, sympathetic letter, and gives Mrs Robinson many particulars of the last hours of her husband, and the efforts that were made to save his life. Nurse Hall-Houghton, in her last letter, says - My two short notes, written at his dictation, will have told you something of his illness, but I know that you will long to hear all that I can tell you. Little did we think when he was first with us that a comparatively small wound, had admitted, into his system enough poison to gradually poison his system through and through. At no time had he any pain worth speaking of in the actual wound, which was thoroughly cleaned by his two operations and when the large piece of overcoat, which the metal had carried into the thigh, had been found and removed we fully expected that all trouble was over, and inside of the wound itself was quite healthy and healed a few days before he was taken. The poison, however, must have been slowly working, and he began to shiver and vomit one day and had a very high temperature. On Sunday Bishop Clifford, our chaplain, visited him, also the Presbyterian minister." |
