At 37 years old, Harry was a corporal in the 2nd Battalion, Scots Guards, British Army during the First World War when the deed for which he was awarded the VC took place. On 13 October 1918 at Saint-Python, France, when the advance was desperately opposed and the streets of the village were raked by fire, Corporal Wood's platoon sergeant was killed and he took command of the leading platoon. The River Selle had to be crossed and the ruined bridge gained, although the space in front of it was full of snipers, so the corporal carried a very large brick into the open space, lay down behind it and, firing continuously on the snipers, covered his men while they worked their way across. Later in the day he repeatedly drove off enemy counter-attacks. Read more on Wikipedia |

Hosegood, nee Green, of 49, Mornington Road, Regent's Park, London. Formerly Lt., Royal Engineers (Militia). Born in Somerset. |
Remark: A birth record exists for John Francis Hosegood: Birth year 1867, Birth quarter 3, District: Holbeach, County: Lincolnshire, Country: England. CWGC has his date of birth as 1863 and is listed as Somerset, however this does not tie into what the census records have recorded. It does not mean that the birth record is correct, it could be he was only registered late or that he tweaked his age to join the military.
John Francis Hosegood was married to Theresa Madeline Miller (Widowed) in the Church of St. Mary in Portsea, Hampshire, England on 20 November 1890 (1st Marriage?) |

Hubert William Estey was born in Mansfield, Massachusetts, USA on 24 January 1891 and was baptised in Charlestown, Suffolk, Massachusetts, USA on 29 January 1893.
The "Boston Globe" on 29 April 1915: NOT LIKELY TO SERVE Youths Who Sailed From Boston Claimed to Be Canadians in Liverpool - Fined 60 Cents Liverpool, April 18 (Correspondence) - Hubert William Estey, a student, and Harry Tanck, a chauffeur, a pair of well-set-up young Americans who arrived in Liverpool on the steamer Devonian from Boston on April 1 and immediately enlisted in the Motor Transport Devision of the Army Service Corps, were fined 60 cents each in a court here as unregistered aliens in a military area. The fine was merely nominal and imposed solely in order to make no exceptions to the enforcement of the law. But it developed thast the adventurous pair had stated that they were Canadians when they took the path of allegiance to the King. This constitutes false attention, so, according to the chief constable, it is likely they will not be allowed to serve.
The "Mansfield News" on 18 June 1915: Dies at Spotted Fever in English Camp A wireless message received Saturday afternoon from London by Frank I. Serymgeour, announces the death of a well known young Mansfield man, Hubert W. Estey. The message stated that Mr. Estey died Wednesday, June 9 in Bulford camp at Salisbury, just outside the city of London. The cause of his death was the dreaded spotted fever. Full particulars will follow by mail. Mr. Estey was 23 years of age, a native of the town, graduated from the high school in the class of 1911. He spent a few years in the employ of the New Haven railroad until last winter when he took up an electrical course in Boston. In March of this year he decided to go to England and possibly to France to see the countries. He had high ideals and was much interested in Red Cross work. He left his country for England on the steamship Devonia, which carried a large number of horses for use of the English army. Mr. and Mrs. Melvin Seaver received a letter from him written early in May, stating that he was well and engaged in running and testing automobiles. A long letter to Clarence H. Serymgeour received a week ago last Monday, mailed May 15, showed that he was still engaged in running and testing automobiles. There were several references to trips between ???ty and the camp that gives the impression, in view of other passages in letters to friends in town, that his duties may have been in connection with the Red Cross service. His nearest surviving relative is an aunt, his father's sister, Mr. Mary Holbrook of Sharon. John R. Halliday, Esq., has become interested in the matter, and will endeavour to ascertain every circumstances in connection with the young man's death, and if possible will have the body sent to this country for final burial. He had many young friends here who regarded him with esteem.
The "Mansfield News" on 25 June 1915: Roland Robbins gone to England Roland Robbins who for some time has been the guard at the Main street crossing of the Taunton branch of the N. Y., N. H. & H. Railroad, sailed from Charlestown Wednesday on the Leyland line steamship Cambria, bound for London, England. Mr. Robbins stated that he does not know how long he will stay in the British Isles. Much will depend on wether he secures the position he is seeking. He will endeavor to find out full pasrticulars relative to the death of Hubert Estey who died recently of spotted fever in Bulford camp at Salisbury, just outside of London.
The "Mansfield News" on 30 July 1915: Estey Had Enlisted in English Army A letter has been received from Curtis Beale who was a companion of Hubert Estey just prior to his death in England, giving further drtails of the young Mansfield man's movements prior to being stricken with the dread spotted fever to which he succumbed in the hospital. Mr. Beale is from Dorchester, Massachusetts. It seems that both he and Estey had enlisted in the automobile corps of the English army. Estey was a despatch bearer, riding a motor vehicle. The first indication of being ill that he gave, was complaint of pain in his legs, and Beale had to carry him to headquarters. He was then taken to the hospital where for 12 days he remained in an unconscious condition until he died. |
