Torpedoed north-west of the Maldive Islands by the Japanese submarine I-29 when en route from Bombay to Mombasa and Durban with 6,400 tons of general cargo and 732 passengers, 222 crew and four gunners. Initially the damage appeared to be comparatively slight, but there was considerable panic among the deck passengers and most of the boats were got away. When the ship was preparing to re-embark them she was hit by a second torpedo and sank rapidly in 07°45'N-61°10'E. The cruiser HMS Birmingham rescued the survivors but 28 crew and 252 passengers were lost. |

On November 11, 1943 in the Mediterranean, KMS31 was attacked by fifty-six German Do-217, He-111 and Ju-88 aircraft. S. S. "Carlier", with general cargo including ammunition and explosives, was hit by three bombs and two aerial torpedoes. She sank in position 36.13N, 00.05W (46 miles NE of Oran). Twenty crew members, one gunner and three passengers survived but forty-one crew members including the Master, seven gunners and nineteen passengers lost their lives. The crew members and gunners are commemorated in the grounds of Cenflumarin at Kallo, near Antwerp. |
