Sacred to the memory of the four grandsons of Rev. Canon John MacAulay Rector of this parish 1849 - 1874 Percy John Frederick MacAulay Lieut. Royal Engineers, killed in action at Wana 3rd November 1894, during a night attack on British Camp by Mahsud Waziris, North West Frontier, India. Aged 27. Kenneth Zachary Pollock MacAulay Lieut. Loyal North Lancashire Regiment died of wounds at Middelburg, Transvaal 30th January 1901. Three days before when on Rear Guard (Mounted Infantry) retreating from Carolina. He fell whilst "Encouraging his men in the most gallant manner". Aged 28. Frederic Charles MacAulay Sergt. 1st Regiment King Edward's Horse Killed in action on trhe front line between Maroc and Loos, France 14th January 1916. Aged 41. The above are the only sons of Col. Charles Edward MacAulay, Indian Staff Corps. Frank Gordon MacAulay Sergt. Canadian Cameron Highlanders Killed in action during an intense bombardment by the enemy at Zillebeke near Ypres 4th June 1916. Aged 29. Only son of the late Alfred Russell MacAulay. "Dulce et Decorum est pro patria mori." (It is sweet and proper to die for the fatherland.) "Greater love hath no man than this." |
