Son of Thomas George and Bridget Betton
of Longdales

On the day Louis Betton was killed the 3rd Division received orders to advance on the La Bassee-Estaires Road, with 7th Brigade on the right and 8th Brigade on the left. Around noon the Germans attacked from Riez Bailleul and overran the Gordon Highlanders who were on the left of 8th Brigade. At 3.oopm the Northumberland Fusiliers were sent forward to support the Gordon's but they found it difficult to find the Gordon's positions or the location of the Germans in thick mist and driving rain. As they were receiving fire from all directions including blue on blue fire, they occupied a trench line that they considered defensible and awaited further developments. The adjutant, Captain Herbert went forward and was wounded, not being brought in until after dark. The Battalion casualties on the day were 8 OR killed, including 8655 Private Betton, and 1 officer and 18 OR wounded (according to Regimental History or 19 according to War Diary)
