Skipper Louis Ozard, aged 44 Chris Dodd, aged 29 Jason Ward, aged 19 David Young, aged 35 Gordon Coram, aged 27 |
The group were aboard the fishing vessel Dawn Waters on March 20, 1996 when it got into difficulty. Wrecksite reports that the boat was bound for Douglas on the Isle of Man, where Mr Ozard had arranged for her to be refuelled, but the weather soon worsened. Captain Hector Thomson, who was on a passing diving support vessel British Enterprise V, was reported to have spotted the boat "jutting from the surface". "No mayday message had been received. Only one crewman, Gordon Coram, was seen on the surface nearby, but a desperate 15 minute battle to save him failed," Wrecksite reports. "Four merchant ships, two helicopters and two lifeboats, including the Douglas Lifeboat, searched unsuccessfully." Louis, a 44-year-old skipper from Newlyn, Chris, a 29-year-old from Mousehole, Gordon, a 27-year-old from Penzance, Jason, a 19-year-old from Plymouth and David, a 35-year-old from Paignton, are all remembered on a plaque on the barbican.

M. F. V. Pescado |

In Memory of the crew of M. F. V. Pescado who perished at sea 28th February 1991. Neil Currie, Jo-Ann Thomas Peter Birley Stephen Hardy, Sean Kelly, Adrian Flynn. |
Neil Currie, Jo-Ann Thomas, Peter Birley, Stephen Hardy, Sean Kelly and Adrian Flynn were aboard the motor fishing vessel Pescado, when it sank in February 1991. The Plymouth-registered beam and scallop trawler is said to have been lost under "mysterious circumstances" with the loss of all six crew while fishing off the south coast of Cornwall. Falmouth Coastguard received a report on March 5 that Pescado had not returned and a large-scale search ensued. Parts of the vessel were identified on March 7 and March 8, as well as a body of one crew member found at this location. On April 26 ,1991, a new wreck was reported to have been found around 13 miles off Dodman Point in Cornwall. The official line remains from the Marine Accident Investigation Branch (MAIB) in 1998: the boat tilted, flooded and sank as a result of inexperienced crew and faulty equipment. But the ship's owner, Alan Ayres, who passed away on June 22, 2020, aged 81, had for decades insisted that a collision with a British Navy submarine caused it to sink - and that there has been a cover-up.
