The Central Cemetery in Brunswick was errected in 1887 and is with its 47 hectare (117 acre) the largest church cemetery in Germany. A lot of unknown and wellknown witnesses of history are buried here.
One part of the cemetery is dedicated the victims of all wars. Soldiers of Brunswick units of both wars are buried in this field but also the victims of the bomb raids of the time between 1939 and 1945.
But before we can enter the war cemetery we must pass a cross which should be understand as warning and admonition.
The text reads as follows:
Wir gedenken der Toten
die durch Kriege ihr
Leben verloren, weil der
Hass in der Welt mächtiger war
als die Liebe
We remember the dead
who lost their life by wars
because the hate
was more powerful in the world
than the love.
