Private PLY/11509 19 January 1884, Chagford, Devon 05 October 1917 33 Royal Marine Light Infantry, H. M. S. "Champagne" Moretonhampstead (St. Andrew) Churchyard, UK Son of Anna Bennett, Lime St., Moretonhampstead, Devon. |
The "Western Times" reported following in October 1917
Moretonhampstead Soldier Killed at Newton Station At the inquest into the circumstances attending the death of Pte. George Bennett, R. M. L. I., of Moretonhampstead, who met his death by falling under a moving train at Newton Station on Friday night, the mother, Mrs. Ann Bennett, said her son George was saying "Good-bye" to her through a carriage window of the 7.30 train to Moreton. She was returning home, and he was rejoining his ship by a later train. As her train moved out he slipped and fell under it. - Two railwaymen who were on the station, and saw the tragedy, stated that the deceased was on the footboard, and on stepping off when the train was in motion, staggered and fell between two coaches, two of which ran over his legs. - A verdict of "Accidental death" was returned, and an expression of sympathy passed with the relatives. |
